John Cena's Peacemaker: New Casting Hints at Amanda Waller's Presence In HBO Max Series

John Cena and Amanda Waller

It was announced in September that James Gunn's Peacemaker series for HBO Max would be a prequel set before The Suicide Squad and explore the origins of the character. The series would quickly fill out its cast with Steve Agee, who will be playing Belle Reve Federal Penitentiary warden John Economos in The Suicide Squad, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo.

More actors from The Suicide Squad filled out the cast, in addition to Chris Conrad playing the role of Adrian Chase, a.k.a. Vigilante.

This character's inclusion would hint at one government outfit being involved known only as The Agency, which was home to Project Peacemaker, focused on monitoring Christopher Smith, Peacemaker himself. New casting seems to give further evidence of their involvement, along with the possible appearance of a certain figurative wall.

NEWS

The Illuminerdi is reporting two new roles currently being cast for Peacemaker with the following descriptions:

Keeya — Black Female, late 20s-early 30s, gay supportive but tired wife, reluctantly dealing with her new wife’s government job and the secrecy it requires, recurring guest star

Jose — 20s-40s, a hospital janitor who is reluctantly pulled into a discussion with a patient who confides in him, recurring role

The role of Jose seems largely inconsequential, but John Sabato of Murphy's Multiverse was able to pin down the significance of the character of Keeya, deducing that the “new government job and the secrecy it requires” could in fact be referring to The Agency. Sabato also laid out that when the leader of The Agency, Valentina Vostok, left, Amanda Waller was there to absorb it and turn it into Checkmate, an all-new covert agency.

He further speculated that it's entirely likely that fans will see Viola Davis's Amanda Waller recruiting John Cena's Peacemaker by the end of the series.

WHAT THIS MEANS

It will be interesting to see how much of the obscure comic book history James Gunn will explore in this series and how it will actually lead into his Suicide Squad movie. Gunn has been coy about the possibility of Peacemaker having more than one season, so it's also entirely possible that fans may not see Peacemaker recruited onto the Squad by Waller in this series.

Regardless of how it will connect, it'll be fun to see James Gunn explore even weirder and off-color characters in this series about an A-hole Captain America, as John Cena had put it during DC FanDome.
