Marvel Spoils Start of Chadwick Boseman's 'What If' Episode With New Trailer

T'Challa, Yondu, What If...?
By Richard Nebens

Marvel Studios is currently enjoying the results of its first animated venture What If…?, which is already bringing rave reviews from viewers worldwide.

Although there are still no signs pointing to how the show's overall narrative will play out, its first entry brought a thrilling new take on the super soldier legacy thanks to the efforts of Captain Carter. Hayley Atwell’s hero had to take Steve Rogers’ place in Project Rebirth, and she proved herself worthy of being an Avenger by taking down the Germans before winding up in front of Nick Fury for other adventures.

The show’s upcoming second episode is confirmed to feature the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa in his final MCU performance as the Prince of Wakanda goes down a new galactic path.

For all the promotional material featuring the new Guardian of the Galaxy, there is still no confirmation as to why T’Challa finds himself leading the Ravagers instead of his native Wakandans.

Fans now have more insight into this Nexus event, although it may be a little more than Marvel may have wanted out to the public right now.

Yondu T'Challa What If
Marvel Studios

The official Guardians of the Galaxy Twitter page shared a short teaser for Episode 2 of Marvel Studios' What If...? which will feature the late Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa Star-Lord.

"In the 1980's, Ego the Living Planet dispatched a crew of Ravagers to Earth in search of his son. Led by Yondu, the Ravagers abducted a child from MISSOURI/WAKANDA."

The video outlines the event that changed everything about this story in the MCU's core timeline as Yondu admonishes the Ravagers by saying "You morons grabbed the wrong kid." It confirms that, in this universe, the Ravagers made the mistake of grabbing T'Challa from Wakanda for Ego instead of taking Peter Quill from Missouri.

The full teaser can be seen below:

Somehow, someway, it appears that this major change in the MCU timeline all goes down due to somebody mistaking a young kid from Missouri for the ambitious prince of a hidden African country.

While it remains to be seen what leads to this confusion, Episode 2 of What If…? will feature a change in story details that is similar in magnitude to that of Episode 1. The series continues to prove there doesn’t have to be some kind of major change of events that takes place to cause a drastically different narrative to push forward.

The video also proves that Star-Lord will be seen in a much different light this time around with Djimon Hounsou’s Korath expressing himself to be “a huge fan” of T’Challa’s work in outer space. Going from a complete unknown to a hero of the galaxy will certainly be an entertaining twist for this new take on the self-proclaimed “legendary outlaw.”

Now that T’Challa’s journey has a little more clarity before the episode arrives, fans will be looking forward to seeing how the rest of his story plays out. Things already seem to be deviating plenty from the original storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy, but there are still details that will be exciting to learn more about in full.

Episode 2 of What If…? will premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.
