What's shaping up to be one of the most hyped superhero films of all time, Spider-Man: No Way Home starring Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange is set to swing into theaters on December 17, 2021 and finally put the overworked rumor mill to rest.
While fans know the threequel involves the Multiverse and villains from Spidey franchises past, the question of how many villains - and potentially Spider-Men - will appear on the big screen is still unknown.
One thing that is for sure about this mysterious, meta threequel is that Spider-Man 2's Alfred Molina is back as Doc Ock; and while audiences saw a glimpse of his reprisal during the film's first trailer, new promotional material has offered another look at Spidey's tentacled nemesis.
New Image of Doc Ock & Tom Holland's Spider-Man
As promotion ramps up for Spider-Man: No Way Home's December release, Empire revealed a new image of Alfred Molina's Doc Ock grabbing Tom Holland's Peter Parker with his signature metal tentacles last seen in No Way Home's record-breaking trailer.
The image shows Doc Ock from behind with one tentacle wrapped around Holland and another holding his head. The photo's caption references Holland's Parker "fighting iconic villains from past lives:"
"Spider-Man: No Way Home isn't just a sequel - it's a massive, meta, multiverse outing in which Peter Parker finds himself fighting iconic villains from past lives. As its creators tell us, this is nothing less than 'Spider-Man: Endgame'..."
This won't be the first time that Molina's Octavius, caught a Spider, as he had Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker in his tentacled grip during the climax of Spider-Man 2:
Doc Ock Makes a Multiversal Housecall
Even though fans have known for some time - partly thanks to Molina - that Doctor Octopus was making a comeback in No Way Home, his return raises more questions than it answers.
In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock is redeemed when he drowns himself and his fusion experiment in order to save the city. Why he's alive, still a villain, and in the world of Tom Holland's Peter Parker in the upcoming film are unknown.
Also, this time around, Doc Ock isn't alone. For this Endgame-style Spider-Man flick, he'll have company, but just who and how many are still unconfirmed.
However, a new report claims that along with the Ock, the rogues teased in the trailer - meaning Green Goblin, Sandman, Lizard, and Electro - will be the film's antagonists, leaving them one baddie shy from a rumored Sinister Six.
While No Way Home's second trailer has yet to drop, due to this new photo, it's expected that audiences will see more of Molina's Doc Ock in action in the weeks ahead; and hopefully, more of who's fighting alongside him and possibly of just who will be fighting against him.
Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17, 2021.
