Synopsis

A Guide to the Ms. Marvel TV Show

Ms. Marvel is set to introduce a brand-new character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form of Kamala Khan, the franchise’s first Pakistani American superhero who lives in Jersey City. Iman Vellani, who will play Ms Marvel, is a Hollywood newcomer. The show marks the actress’ first acting role in her young career.

Ms Marvel introduces Kamala Khan, an avid gamer and a fan-fiction writer who is a super hero mega fan of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. The upcoming live action Disney+ series is also set to tackle Kamala’s ups and downs during high school while also eventually doing a deep dive into her newfound powers.

The series is directed by a team consisting of several incredible people, namely Bad Boys For Life and Batgirl directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Bisha K. Ali serves as the creator and head scribe of the series, with the show being overseen by Marvel Studios.

The MCU series boasts a stellar cast that includes Matt Lintz as Bruno Carrelli, Saagar Shaikh as Kamala’s older brother Amir Khan, and Aramis Knight as Red Dagger. The show also features Yasmeen Fletcher, Laurel Mardsen, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Khapur, Anjali Bhimani, Mehwish Hayat, and Farhan Akhtar.

When talking about Miss Marvel, one of the main subjects of discourse among fans is the character’s powers.

In Marvel Comics, Kamala is affected by the Terrigen Mists, thus unlocking her abilities as an Inhuman that includes altering her size, shapeshifting, and increasing her mass. However, in the Disney+ series, Vellani’s Kamala will exhibit a different power set rather than featuring giant hands and arms.

Based on what is shown from the trailers and promo images, the MCU’s Ms Marvel obtains her powers through a special set of bangles infused with cosmic energy. Kamala uses this artifact to create powerful purple constructs to fend off enemies like the rumored main villains of the series namely the ClanDestine and a government organization, N.I.C.E.

The Ms Marvel powers usually revolve around stretching, so her MCU purple constructs are a changeup from her comic origins.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed the Ms. Marvel's power change, saying that it was due to the timing of the character’s debut into the universe. Ms Marvel executive producer and co-creator Sana Amanat also chimed in on the topic, saying that they made sure that the hero’s powers are “linking to the larger stories” within the MCU, specifically Kamala’s next outing in The Marvels

Despite the power change, Kamala will wear a comic-accurate costume in Ms. Marvel. Official footage has showcased the new MCU hero wearing a homemade Captain Marvel suit during Avengers Con, but eventually, Kamala will end up sporting a similar look as her comic book counterpart in the latter part of the series.

After her own Marvel series, Kamala will next head to the big screen to join forces with her idol Carol Danvers and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau in The Marvels. The sequel had its fair share of delays over the past year. At one point, it was even supposed to 2022’s Marvel movie slate, but the studio’s consistent shift in its release dates ultimately landed a July 28, 2023 premiere.

The show’s connection to the Captain Marvel sequel is still unknown, but it is possible that its post credit scene would involve either Danvers or Rambeau to showcase how Kamala heads to space.

The Ms Marvel release date is set for June 8th on Disney+.
