The crown jewel of this presentation is expected to be Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday, which is predicted to be the biggest movie released in 2026. While details on the presentation have not been confirmed, Disney is predicted to deliver something big for the fifth Avengers movie.

The Insidious franchise is set to return in 2026, and it is only fitting for fans to learn how to watch the slate of films in the proper order to better understand the mystery behind the Further and the ghosts within it. The Insidious horror movies mainly revolve around a limbo-like realm called the Further, a dimension where lost souls and demons lurk, waiting to possess or drag the living in. 

The main targets of these malevolent spirits are people with psychic or astral projection abilities because they can be easily lured into the Further. The key protagonists in this horror franchise are Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) and the Lambert family, led by patriarch Josh (The Conjuring's Patrick Wilson), while the evil ghosts include the Red-Faced Demon (Lipstick-Face Demon) and the Bride in Black.

The Insidious movie timeline spans the 1950s to 2020, delving into how dangerous the Further really is and how the boundaries between that realm and the real world weaken under the sinister power of its inhabitants.

Known as the largest gathering in the world for movie theater employees, CinemaCon is a central hub for some of the biggest announcements of the year about upcoming theatrical releases. After presentations from studios like Warner Bros., the announcements move forward in bulk.

CinemaCon 2026 is well into its third day in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it is set to conclude on Thursday, April 16. Amazon MGM Studios will hold its official CinemaCon presentation between 8:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. PT.

CinemaCon, the largest panel trade show where all the major Hollywood studios come together to showcase their upcoming movie libraries to theater owners and distributors, will begin its third day with a panel from Universal Studios.

Last year, Universal Studios wowed CinemaCon with its lineup of How To Train Your Dragon's live-action remake, Wicked's sequel Wicked For Good, and the highly successful Jurassic World Rebirth. 

In March, HBO Max removed several popular films, including V for Vendetta, The Whale, and more, with others planned to leave by the end of April. However, this is simply the nature of streaming services with expiring licenses and deals, with one particular sci-fi gem set to disappear.

By the end of the month, subscribers will lose access to an especially prestigious line of films, like Inception, Spider-Man, Little Miss Sunshine, and Alex Garland's critically acclaimed directorial debut, Ex Machina. A writer in Hollywood for decades, most famous for writing 28 Days Later, Garland's original sci-fi drama couldn't be a better film from a first-time director.

With multiple accolades, including an Oscar, there are plenty of reasons users should check out Garland's 10/10 sci-fi masterpiece before it leaves HBO Max in 2 weeks.

As of writing, CinemaCon 2026 is moving into its second day of events in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Warner Bros. panel will run from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. PT, covering more than a handful of major theatrical releases while the studio is in the midst of a potential merger with Paramount.

Mortal Kombat 2 is putting Shao Khan at the center of its popcorn bucket selection. The Mortal Kombat franchise will expand further this year after a dozen mainline games, this time continuing the big-screen tale that began in 2021. Warner Bros. is expected to highlight Mortal Kombat 2 as part of its CinemaCon panel as it edges closer to its Friday, May 8, release, five years after the last movie. The champions of Earthrealm will enter a high-stakes tournament against the forces of the dark Outworld, ruled over by the franchise's main antagonist, Shao Khan.

The Direct captured exclusive new looks at Mortal Kombat 2's concession merch line at CinemaCon, where several key items from the range were on display. The star of the show is the "I Am Shao Khan" helmet, which has already been confirmed for sale at Cinemark, AMC Theaters, and Regal.

Masters of the Universe's popcorn buckets have finally been revealed, and they are truly incredible, especially for fans of Jared Leto's villain, Skeletor. Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage has found his way into yet another franchise since beginning his journey through Game of Thrones' Westeros in 2011. Before his time in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros launched him into stardom, Dinklage got his start in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian as Trumpkin, a loyal red dwarf. However, it was his starring role as Tyrion Lannister, the witty intellectual dwarf son of Tywin, in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, for which he picked up four "Best Supporting Actor" Emmy awards. His impressive performance has catapulted Dinklage into the A-list to the point that he has found his way into more of the biggest pop culture mythoses in the years since.

According to Deadline, Peter Dinklage has signed on for Season 2 of Alien: Earth, marking his debut in the Ridley Scott-created sci-fi horror franchise that already spans nine movies and the live-action FX series. The Game of Thrones icon will feature as a series regular as he joins his ninth major franchise since the HBO fantasy series began, and the 11th in his over-three-decade acting career.

Tangled's newly cast star, Milo Manheim, made one promise to fans ahead of his debut as the live-action Flynn Rider. News broke earlier in January that Manheim would star alongside Teagan Croft in the live-action adaptation of Disney's 2010 animated musical. The Tangled remake is part of an ongoing trend from Disney to re-release its animated classics in live-action, which saw success in 2025 with Lilo & Stitch. 

It's still early days for Tangled and the live-action adaptation doesn't even have a release date yet, but anticipation is mounting following the casting of Rapunzel and Flynn. During promotion for School Spirits Season 3, Manheim told The Direct he was only "at the beginning of the process" of his role in Tangled, but that he "care[s] so deeply" about Flynn Rider. 

Manheim said the role was wish fulfilment for him, as he'd always dreamed of "being a bandit on the run in this beautiful, aesthetic world." Reflecting on how his portrayal might be different from the animated version, the actor added an assurance that he would "honor" the original "the best he can:"

Thrash, Netflix's new disaster film, has a crazy premise: a hurricane destroys the levees in a coastal town, flooding multiple city blocks. To up the ante to the next level, on top of fighting for their lives against a deadly flood, the local residents must also survive a pack of hungry, vicious sharks out for blood.

The most impressive thing about Thrash, streaming on Netflix, is how real the flooded neighborhood looks. Of course, the production didn't actually flood a real town, but it certainly could have fooled me.

The Direct sat down with the stars of Thrash to discuss their experience filming in such intense conditions on a set that feels both believable and visceral.

Exit 8 took gamers by storm when it was released in 2023. The indie adventure video game had a fantastic hook: players would walk through an endless subway tunnel, searching for the smallest anomalies. If you found one, such as repeating advertisements or blood leaking from the walls, you had to turn back; otherwise, your progress toward the exit would be reset.

It's not a horror game one would assume could become a movie one day, especially since video game adaptations can go either way with audiences. Director Genki Kawamura had different plans and turned the game into Exit 8, a movie that's finally making its way to the United States on April 10.

In an exclusive interview with The Direct, Exit 8 director and co-writer Genki Kawamura revealed which anomaly from the video game he wanted to include in the film, but, in the end, it just didn't work.

HBO Max subscribers in the US will lose access to many popular films in April 2026. Removals of content due to license expiries or new content deals are a regular part of streaming platforms' processes nowadays, but it's still frustrating for viewers when a title they're looking forward to watching suddenly disappears. That will be the case again throughout April as HBO Max removes almost two dozen titles.

This is particularly tough for HBO Max, which is home to many big films and series thanks to its status as a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. The move also comes amid uncertainty at WBD as it enters a potential merger with Paramount Skydance.

Those wanting to watch the following films should do it soon, before the movies are removed by April 30.

April 2026 will see 13 new horror, fantasy, and sci-fi movies grace U.S. audiences. 2026 has much to offer in the sci-fi and fantasy realms, including Supergirl, The Mandalorian & Grogu, Masters of the Universe, Dune: Part Three, and Avengers: Doomsday, with Ryan Gosling's smash hit Project Hail Mary already in the rearview mirror. Mermaid (April 8)

Horror fans will soon see the unexpected reboot of one of the most infamous genre films of all time: Faces of Death. Releasing on Friday, April 10, this new movie, starring Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria) and Dacre Montgomery (Dead Man's Wire), creates a unique new meta-angled narrative.

The original Faces of Death was banned in over 40 countries after its 1978 release. The movie followed a pathologist, played by an actor who served as the film's narrator, who showed audiences videos of gruesome deaths. While a chunk of these clips were real, some of the more intimate ones were fake—though that didn't stop many from believing otherwise.

It's the last thing you'd expect to get a reboot. However, it does certainly offer a twist. 2026's horror flick Faces of Death sees Montgomery embody a serial killer and reenact scenes from the original movie. This is something Ferreira's Margot soon catches on to, thanks to her content moderation job at a massive social media company.

A behind-the-scenes image from the set of Disney's Zombies 5 revealed a preview of what to expect in the upcoming sequel's underwater setting. Following the game-changing ending of Zombies 4, in which the Daywalkers and Vampires reached a truce, the fifth installment of the Zombies franchise will focus on the next generation of characters, headlined by Nova and Victor. They will deal with the arrival of a band of fierce mermaids who seem bent on disrupting the peace they built amongst the two groups.

Zombies 5 cinematographer Carlos Gonzalez shared a new image of the clapperboard for the sequel, signaling the start of production. The clapper's design featured mermaids swimming underwater, paired with the playful headline, "Make a Splash," reinforcing the film's aquatic setting. 

Lionsgate is opening the doors to Neverland earlier than expected, and that's great news for Michael's quality. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of the successful Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis, Rocketman, and other blockbuster-scale musical biopics, the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson, is next up. Fans have expressed concerns about Michael's quality after the flick underwent a hefty 22 days of reshoots last summer to retool its third act.

According to a post on X from Embargo Lifts For, critics' first reactions to Michael will be released on socials on Friday, April 10, two weeks before the Michael Jackson biopic lands in theaters on Friday, April 24. This date is on the earlier end for the first critic reactions to a major blockbuster to surface online, signaling that Lionsgate is confident in its much-anticipated biopic and its quality.
