With summer coming to a close and fall rapidly approaching, the film industry is still suspended in uncertainty due to COVID-19. Summer blockbusters such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow have been rescheduled multiple times with Wonder Woman 1984 now cautiously set to premiere this October. Meanwhile, Black Widow's chances of skipping theaters for a Disney+ release are higher than ever.
Even though Hollywood is still stuck on pause, that may not be the case for the DCEU which has continued to adapt and build fan hype with their upcoming DC FanDome convention and move forward with announcements of new films and projects.
According to The Illuminerdi, the currently untitled Shazam 2, the sequel to 2019's Shazam! starring Zachery Levi and Asher Angel, is scheduled to start filming in spring 2021 with a current release date of November 4, 2022.
The film's original creators are set to return to the sequel, including director David F. Sandberg, producer Peter Safran, and writer Henry Gayden.
While we know very little about the film at this point, it's possible that the sequel's antagonist may be Mister Mind, an alien worm who is one of Shazam's most challenging foes. It's also possible that this film may explore the seven realms of magic.
WHAT THIS MEANS
The film's 2022 release date should allow for any possible COVID-related setbacks or complications, as well as grant the time needed to explore and expand the world of Shazam. Also, since Black Adam, another upcoming DCEU film led by Dwayne Johnson is scheduled for a 2021 release, this may mean that Black Adam is somehow involved in Shazam 2.
Fans are sure to learn about what the filmmakers have in mind at the Shazam! panel at DC FanDome on August 22nd.
