Marvel Studios is about 90 minutes' worth of screen time into its new venture on Disney+, and the last of those minutes are beginning to tease some madness on the horizon.
While the first two episodes of WandaVision showed the beginning of the titular couple's life in 1950s and 60s suburbia, Episode 3 set roots for the series deeper in the MCU, with a simple look back at Avengers: Age of Ultron . With one mention of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner's AI creation , Wanda Maximoff unleashed her most powerful outburst of the series thus far and hurled Monica Rambeau into the real world.
Wanda may have displayed some potentially villainous tendencies with these actions, but there are no signs pointing to who will be the primary antagonist of WandaVision yet. A couple of names have been thrown around in recent weeks, and one, in particular, is back in the forefront after a chat with the show's leading woman behind the scenes.
COULD WANDAVISION INTRODUCE MEPHISTO?
In a recent interview with Deadline , WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer teased the potential arrival of Marvel Comics big bad Mephisto with a telling non-answer. When asked if Agnes' husband, who fans have only heard reference to from Agnes, is the villainous Mephisto, Schaeffer simply replied "I cannot answer that" while explaining "there is not an Easter eggs staff member."
Schaeffer proceeded to heap praise onto Marvel's department heads for their use of breadcrumbs and teases laid out through the series:
"There are so many people who have worked on Marvel productions, it’s a lot of talented people coming together and contributing their ideas that they know."
A NEW BIG BAD IN THE MCU?
Mephisto is one of the more notable villains in Marvel Comics, especially considering his prowess with dark magic. Considering how deeply this series is set to dive into Wanda Maximoff's magical powers and her creation of an alternate reality, the path to Mephisto's arrival is certainly a possibility.
Looking at the MCU's future on Disney+, this isn't the first time Marvel's iteration of the devil has been brought up. A tease for the villain was seen in set photos for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , and a short scene from the Loki trailer hinted at a possible debut alongside the God of Mischief .
Even with major Marvel villains like Kang the Conqueror and Doctor Doom making their first appearances in the next few years, Mephisto would be on that same level in terms of magnitude. Whether he shows up in WandaVision or another Disney+ project is still unknown; however, considering how coy Jac Schaeffer was at the mention of his name, fans should be on the lookout sooner rather than later.
WandaVision will continue with Episode 4 on Disney+ on Friday, January 29, 2021.
