Back when Warner Bros bet everything on the Suicide Squad, from producing a second movie and pushing out an ill-conceived live-service video game based on them, the studio even gave the team an anime series called Suicide Squad Isekai. However, not to be outdone by his former henchwoman, the Clown Prince of Crime will be getting his own anime series solving Batman's murder.

At this year's Annecy Animation Showcase, DC Studios and Warner Bros Animation announced that Sola Entertainment and Yasuhiro Aoki, previously collaborating with them on The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, will produce and direct a new anime series called Joker: Laugh Riot.

DC Studios revealed the best look yet at Bradley Cooper's Jor-El in costume. Cooper followed in the footsteps of Oscar-winning actors Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe with Superman, becoming the latest to play the Man of Steel's late Kryptonian father Jor-El. Of course, the DCU's Jor-El was much different from his predecessors, as Superman confirmed that he sent his son to Earth not to be a hero, but to conquer and continue their Kryptonian bloodline. 

The Westworld actress behind Jor-El's wife, Lara Lor-Van, in the DCU, Angela Sarafyan, took to Instagram one year after her Superman cameo to offer up a behind the scenes look at the shoot. Sarafyan stood with DC Studios executive producer Lars Winther and her in-universe hubby, Bradley Cooper, dressed in all-white Kryptonian garb, marking the most detailed look at their costumes yet.

The DCU’s Clayface movie just revealed the best look yet at the villain’s shapeshifting transformation. Tom Rhys Harries stars in the upcoming body horror as Matt Hagen, a rising actor who turns to an experimental treatment after a brutal attack disfigures his face. Clayface is the first feature film from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios to center on a Batman villain, and its marketing keeps hinting at how gruesome Hagen’s change will get.

The footage comes from a green band trailer for Clayface, a version approved for general audiences, which theaters are currently playing before showings of Supergirl. The tamer cut trims the graphic material from April’s first trailer and slips in a handful of new shots, which quickly spread online. The standout is a close-up of Hagen’s hand as it begins to bubble and morph.

DC Studios is putting the spotlight on Superboy way before its eventual live-action debut under the DCU banner. My Adventures with Superman Season 3 introduced Superboy with an unexpected twist because he is not portrayed as the traditional clone of Superman and Lex Luthor. Instead, the show's version of Jon Kent came from a post-apocalyptic future where LexCorp Drones took over the world and is the biological son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. Superboy's arrival completely changed the core dynamic between Clark, Lois, Jimmy, and Kara, raising the stakes while injecting youthful energy. 

DC Studios (via Adult Swim) officially released its first-ever Superboy poster as part of the promotional wave for My Adventures with Superman Season 3. 

The poster features Jon Kent in a dynamic pose that perfectly captures his positive and wide-eyed personality amid the chaos. 

A major DC villain, typically depicted as stoic, might be learning to embrace their funny bone in the DCU. Superman's first spinoff, Supergirl, is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. After poor reviews hit the internet, moviegoers decided to stay home rather than visit their local theater, leading to a historically bad opening weekend at the box office for the Milly Alcock-led movie.

But Supergirl isn't the hope for Superman's legacy. Of course, James Gunn is working hard on Man of Tomorrow, a direct follow-up to his hit 2025 film. And then there's the Jimmy Olsen series, which will take the journalist out of the Daily Planet office and onto the road as he investigates mysteries involving DC villains.

Milly Alcock’s salary for Supergirl just surfaced, and naturally it invites a quick comparison to what David Corenswet earned to play Superman. Alcock headlines the newest DC Studios film as Kara Zor-El, cousin of the Man of Steel, in the first leading movie role of her career. Supergirl arrived as one of the biggest bets yet for the rebooted DC Universe, though its opening weekend fell well short of what Warner Bros. wanted.

A new report pegs Alcock’s pay at around $400,000 for the lead role, a slim number by superhero standards. This trails the $750,000 Corenswet earned for Superman last summer. Interestingly, Corenswet wasn’t even the highest earner on his own film, since Nicholas Hoult took home $2 million to play Lex Luthor. Hoult owes his handsome earnings to his standing as the most established name in the cast, having already featured in the X-Men films and Mad Max: Fury Road.

The new Green Lantern spin-off series from DC Studios is poised to introduce two distinct Lantern Corps. In addition to its live-action offerings, DC Studios is investing heavily in a slate of animated series, including a spin-off of the anime-inspired My Adventures With Superman. The series, titled My Adventures With Green Lantern, takes place in the same animated universe and will delve deep into Green Lantern lore. 

New details about My Adventures With Green Lantern were dropped at the recent Annecy Animation Festival, including confirmation that the series will seemingly introduce more colors than the typical Green Lantern. According to Nexus Point News, the upcoming animated show will feature "yellow and red Lanterns" as villains, suggesting that the Red and Yellow Lantern Corps will be introduced alongside the Green Lantern Corps. 

The series is set in Los Angeles, at Hal Jordan Memorial High, and will focus on Jessica Cruz, an anxious teenager whose life changes when she's chosen by a Green Lantern ring. The character appears in My Adventures With Superman Season 3 ahead of her spin-off show's release. 

Supergirl just flopped at the box office, and six DCU movies may be at risk. The DCU's second movie, Supergirl, recently opened in theaters and, sadly, the reactions were much more mixed than last year's Superman. Not only did Supergirl land a "Rotten" 54% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but it also failed to pull in audiences, resulting in a disappointing "B-" CinemaScore.

Supergirl's bad word of mouth has carried over to the box office, where it opened in second place behind Toy Story 5's second week with $37.1 million domestically, far below projections that it could cross $50 million. The picture was just as bleak globally, as Supergirl brought in just $62.6 million worldwide in its first weekend. For context, that is around 30% of the $125 million that Superman debuted with domestically, and roughly 29% of its $217 million worldwide opening.

With competition looming from Minions & Monsters in Supergirl's second weekend, Supergirl is on track to be a financial disaster with a $170 million production and $120 million marketing budget. According to Variety, DC Studios stands to lose $100 to $120 million from its latest offering. The studio's co-CEO, Peter Safran, addressed the result in a comment to The New York Times, noting that, despite Supergirl disappointing, they "remain confident" in the larger DCU strategy:

DC Studios recently added a brand new Batman animated TV series to its schedule, and it may be exactly what the studio needs. Between The Batman: Part 2 and The Brave and the Bold for the big screen, an animated Batman: Knightfall trilogy set for digital release, and Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 coming soon to Amazon Prime Video, DC Studios is going all-in on the Dark Knight. Recently, the studio added another project to its plans at the Annecy Film Festival, where it was announced that Absolute Batman is getting an animated show.

In many ways, Absolute Batman has the potential to be DC Studios' answer to Amazon Prime Video's Invincible. It is similarly expected to be a rare, truly faithful adaptation of an ongoing comic run developed by its original creator, helping to successfully reenact the highly acclaimed narrative for a new medium.

Notably, Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the animated adaptation, just as Invincible creator Robert Kirkman has for four seasons and counting. But Snyder won't be the first DC Comics writer to showrun an adaptation of his work, as Tom King will carry the same duties on Mister Miracle, a DCU series based on his New Gods-focused run.

DC Studios' next DCU movie after Man of Tomorrow isn't what many expected (or were hoping for). One year after Superman sped its way into theaters with a "good, not great" box office performance, the second flick from James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU, Supergirl, has arrived, and it's not delivering. After receiving mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, Supergirl brought in just $68 million worldwide in its opening weekend (under one-third of Superman's $220 million opening). DC Studios is only now in production on Man of Tomorrow and The Batman: Part 2 to release in 2027, but the next movie beyond that may have revealed itself.

According to a report from The Wrap, DC Studios is "prioritizing" its Deathstroke and Bane team-up movie, although no cast or director is lined up. Recently, Deadline claimed that Superbad and Peacemaker director Greg Mottola is a "front-runner" to lead the charge on Deathstroke and Bane's team-up. It was first reported in September 2024 that Captain America: Brave New World scribe Matthew Orton was cooking up a script starring the two villains/anti-heroes.

A new photo from Man of Tomorrow sets up a major connection to Peacemaker Season 2 ahead of the film's release. Superman and Peacemaker kicked off the DCU's slate in 2025, marking the second and third new releases after Creature Commandos in December 2024. While the franchise is still in its early days, connections between projects are already being built quickly across film and TV.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn shared the first official image from the set of Man of Tomorrow, which he is also directing and writing. This picture showed off Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor on an unknown planet, standing in a bed of sand. He is also wearing Lex's classic green war suit, which has been seen on various occasions in DC Comics. Man of Tomorrow is filming and will debut in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Sebastian Stan has been the apple of the internet's eye ever since he was cast in The Batman - Part 2. An actor of his caliber making the jump from Marvel to DC couldn't help but cause a stir. But he's not the only major superhero performer to enter Matt Reeves' world in the sequel. Scarlett Johansson, best known for playing Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in the MCU, joined Part 2's cast around the same time as Stan.

Johansson and Stan signing on the dotted lines in quick succession made sense because reports claimed they'd be playing a couple. All signs pointed to Harvey Dent and his wife, Gilda Gold, breaking bad and causing all sorts of problems for Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight. However, with filming on Part 2 finally kicking off, the winds are starting to change.

Insider Jeff Sneider recently walked back his report about Stan playing Dent, claiming that his real role is none other than serial killer Victor Zsasz. Dent is apparently still in the movie, with Brian Tyree Henry getting the honor of calling the district attorney's office home. Sneider didn't reveal where Johansson's coin landed, but it doesn't sound like Gold is still on the table.

DC Studios shared a new look at several animated series set to be released over the next few years. DC is pushing ahead with a few separate sub-stories and plot threads across the greater comic book franchise, including but not limited to the main DCU timeline, under DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. While many of these projects are live-action movies and TV shows, animation also plays a big role in the broader DC world.

Sequels are still all the rage in Hollywood as the major studios work to build new franchises and rejuvenate old ones. 2026 alone has over a dozen different film sequels on the schedule, with everyone from Mario to the Mandalorian getting their time on the big screen, and that list only gets longer when looking ahead to 2027. 

Next year will herald the return of major IPs from Disney, Marvel Studios, and DC, not to mention more legacy sequels and successors to breakout box-office hits. 

All the Major Movie Sequels Releasing in 2027

DC and Sideshow Collectibles have teamed up to bring back Ben Affleck's Knightmare Batman with a grand statue. The Knightmare timeline was crucial to Zack Snyder's DCEU plans, representing an alternate future in which Darkseid killed Amy Adams' Lois Lane and used the Anti-Life Equation to brainwash Henry Cavill's grief-stricken Superman into tyrannically ruling Earth, which had been terraformed into New Apokolips. Blaming himself for failing to save Lois Lane and avert this future, Ben Affleck's Batman led a ragtag insurgency that included Flash, Cyborg, Mera, Deathstroke, and even Joker in this Knightmare reality. 

Sideshow Collectibles unveiled a brand new, limited edition "Knightmare Batman" life-size bust from Zack Snyder's Justice League. The 1:1 scale silicone replica is inspired by the SnyderVerse's alternate Knightmare timeline in which Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne "stands as humanity's final beacon" in a hopeless world:

DC Studios officially unveiled the first stunning look at Batman's new suit in Batman: Knightfall Part 1. The upcoming R-rated 2026 Batman movie will closely follow the early Knightfall comic arc, focusing on Bane's orchestrated attack against the Dark Knight, designed to push him to his absolute breaking point. In the original DC Comics storyline, there are two notable Batsuits: Bruce Wayne's standard one and the heavily modified armored suit worn by his replacement, Jean-Paul Valley (aka Azrael). 

DC Studios (via an Amazon listing) revealed the first look at the design of Batman's new Batsuit in Batman: Knightfall Part 1, embracing a grittier aesthetic with distinctive spiked shoulder pads and subtle segmented armor plating. 

DC Studios made some significant alterations to Supergirl following its test screenings, according to an insider who attended one. The latest DCU film focuses on Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock), on a journey that draws upon the seminal Supergirl comic Woman of Tomorrow. Like most major movies, Supergirl underwent a test screening process ahead of its release, which led to some changes to the cut now in theatres. 

While it's not always known what changes are made after test screenings, writer Dan Marcus shared some of the alterations he noticed having seen both the final and test screening cuts of Supergirl. Marcus noted he attended a test screening in February 2026 and that the "cut wasn't very different" from the one released in cinemas, though he pointed out a few key changes.

Marcus noted that the start of the film was one of the immediate changes, with the test screening featuring an "alternate opening" that "started with the destruction of Krypton." The death of Superman and Supergirl's homeworld is a pivotal moment in their lore, and Supergirl was the DCU film chosen to show this, which was particularly relevant given how it plays into Kara's character. Unlike Kal-El, Kara grew up on Krypton, and it was only years later, after Argo City began to poison its inhabitants with radiation, that Kara's father sent her to Earth. 

Plenty of changes are always to be expected when adapting comic books into movies, some for the best, but many for the worse. Sadly, Craig Gillespie's Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, is another case of changes made for the worse, with one change in particular outright ruining the thematic crux of writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

It was already concerning news when DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn alluded to Supergirl having her Pre-Crisis origin rather than her Post-Crisis roots. A change confirmed by Kara herself in Supergirl when she told Ruthye her tragic origin story, mentioning that she was born eight years after the destruction of Krypton and raised on the floating piece of Argo City. But even that change pales in comparison to the ending.

Lobo is finally making his big screen debut in DC Studios' Supergirl, and the fan favorite comic book character already has his next DC project confirmed. Jason Momoa brings the extraterrestrial mercenary to life in the live-action DCU film, and the actor seems eager to keep the role. However, Lobo's next role might not be the one fans were expecting.

During the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, DC Studios confirmed details about its new animated superhero series, Starfire! The series follows the Teen Titans team member on a solo adventure, in which Starfire will reportedly lead a team of alien girls. According to a report from Nexus Point News, "Lobo, Gotham City, and Thanagarians will all be making an appearance" in Starfire! 

The inclusion of a violent mercenary like Lobo in what's been described as a kids' show is fairly surprising, although Starfire and Lobo do have a history of interactions in DC Comics and in the animated series Teen Titans Go!. 

Despite Superman's lore getting deeper with every DC Studios project, his greatest villain is still sitting on the sidelines. Supergirl never shied away from its connections to its predecessor, Superman. David Corenswet's hero appeared in the film's marketing, which also promised flashbacks to an intact Krypton. The final product certainly delivers on those promises, providing additional context to the events leading up to the planet's destruction.

While travelling the galaxy with Ruthye Marye Knoll, Kara Zor-El tries to put the traumatized child on a better path and uses herself as an example of what not to become. Of course, losing her family at a young age sent Kara down a dark road, as she feels guilty for leaving everyone behind to find a better life.
