Now that The Book of Boba Fett is over, all eyes are on Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series now has an official release date of May 25, as well as a poster to go along with it. It will feature the returns of both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, respectively, and showcase Kenobi's time on Tatooine between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope as he protects a young Luke Skywalker.
With the series getting closer and closer, marketing will surely start to ramp up. Fans have been patiently awaiting an official teaser trailer for some time now, and with the release date official to the public, the footage will likely come sooner rather than later.
The production team behind Obi-Wan Kenobi has been extremely tight-lipped, careful not to give away any major plot details. However, it has been rumored in the past that Anakin and Obi-Wan will have an epic rematch at some point in the series.
McGregor recently gave his thoughts on returning to Star Wars, and what fans can expect from the show. As if the anticipation for the series wasn't already bubbling over, a new Easter egg in the poster will likely get fans even more excited.
Anakin's Lightsaber in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Poster
Following the announcement that Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 25, 2022, Disney and Star Wars also released the first official poster for the series.
In the poster, a lightsaber can be seen in Obi Wan's right hand. As fans have noticed on Twitter, when zoomed in at a high resolution, it appears to be the lightsaber of none other than the one that belonged to Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith. It is not confirmed that the lightsaber is definitely Anakin's, but due to the shape of the hilt, it appears to be the blade that Obi-Wan will eventually pass down to Luke.
"Before the Dark Times, Before the Empire"
Anakin's lightsaber is a symbol that any Star Wars fan can recognize immediately. In A New Hope, Obi-Wan brings Luke back to his hut on Tatooine and briefly tells him about his father, the Clone Wars, and the Jedi Order. Then he grabs a box and pulls out the lightsaber that belonged to Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker, and gives the weapon to him.
When referring to the time period prior to the reign of the Empire, Obi-Wan says "Before the dark times." Those "dark times" that he is referring to are the fall of the Jedi during Order 66, which was led primarily by Anakin just before their fight on Mustafar.
It is safe to assume that Obi-Wan didn't just lock Anakin's lightsaber away after he took it from him in Revenge of the Sith. Having spent many years with Anakin as his apprentice, and the two fighting side-by-side all throughout The Clone Wars, the old Jedi Master probably feels enormous guilt about his apprentice's fall to the dark side.
Ewan McGregor recently confirmed that he and Hayden Christensen were able to film scenes together, suggesting that there will most likely be flashbacks before his transition into Darth Vader. Meditation is a common practice for Jedi, and it is likely that the series will feature at least one if not more scenes of Obi-Wan meditating over Anakin's lightsaber.
The lightsaber definitely holds a lot of pain for the character, and while it will often remind him of what he lost, it can also be used to re-live some of the best memories he ever made.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will begin streaming on May 25 on Disney+.
