Much like the deserts of Tatooine, so is Disney+ without new Star Wars content. Thankfully, that's all about to end. On May 25, Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series is set to debut and finally tell the tale of Kenobi's time on Tatooine between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. The series stars Ewan McGregor, reprising his role from George Lucas' prequel trilogy, along with Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker and/or Darth Vader.
While Star Wars fans know Kenobi's mission on Tatooine, the question is whether a young Luke Skywalker will make an appearance, given that the series takes place ten years after Order 66 and his birth.
Naturally, there's been a bounty of rumors and potential leaks about the show's plot and its cast list, especially in lieu of a trailer. But now, fans are finally getting some definitive answers from Lucasfilm about Obi-Wan Kenobi and if there's more than one Skywalker reunion on the Jedi Master's horizon.
Luke Skywalker's Role in Obi-Wan Kenobi Confirmed
In addition to new photos from the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, Entertainment Weekly has also confirmed that Ewan McGregor's Kenobi's objective on Tatooine is to watch over Luke Skywalker.
One photo, in particular, shows Kenobi in an empty Tatooine cave which serves as his base for keeping an eye on young Luke and reflects the Jedi Master's state at the start of the series. In fact, according to McGregor, "We find Obi-Wan at the beginning of our story rather broken, and faithless, and beaten, somewhat given up."
This supports earlier rumors and reports regarding the presence of a young Luke and Leia in the series, as well as Ewan McGregor's vague but telling response when asked about the Jedi-to-be's involvement in the show.
Luke Skywalker's Reoccurring Role on Disney+
The fact Obi-Wan Kenobi will feature a young Luke Skywalker isn't a huge surprise. Since Kenobi's mission on Tatooine is anything but a secret to Star Wars fans, it would've been difficult not to show Luke in some form or fashion.
Still, this confirmation means that every Disney+ Star Wars series, so far, has featured Luke Skywalker; and that itself is surprising. Especially since Star Wars fans didn't expect to see the original trilogy hero again after 2019's The Rise of Skywalker.
However, a young Luke Skywalker is something audiences have only seen in animation, particularly in Star Wars Rebels. It will definitely be interesting to see how a young version of the Jedi will be portrayed in live-action for the first time and just how much of an impact he will have on Obi-Wan and the series' story.
Also, it's worth noting that Obi-Wan's cave in this newly released photo is not where he lived in A New Hope. In the original 1977 film, Obi-Wan takes Luke to a hut on Tatooine, and it's there he shows the young Skywalker his father's lightsaber.
Clearly, Obi-Wan will be relocating at some point on the desert planet. Just how that will factor into this series' story remains to be seen.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to debut on Disney+ on May 25, 2022.
