Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to be Tom Holland's biggest outing as the character yet, bridging the MCU's incarnation of Spidey with villains of past Peter Parkers. Previous webslingers are potentially still on the table too, with mounting rumors and evidence suggesting that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are heading over to help Holland's hero.
New pieces of promotional material have teased tidbits about the film's plot and characters, including new looks at Jamie Foxx's Electro in addition to the supposed location of the film's final battle. The Spider-Man threequel's international poster demonstrated just how much the film will be packing in, featuring Doctor Strange, the Lizard, and an all-new suit for the Green Goblin.
All of this and more will reportedly be packed into a 2 hour and 28-minute runtime, making No Way Home the fourth-longest MCU movie to date.
While rumors of Maguire and Garfield returning continue to loom, Spider-Man: No Way Home will give Tom Holland time to shine in what could be "the end of a franchise."
Sony producer Amy Pascal has now discussed how Holland's portrayal of Spider-Man squares up with previous live-action depictions.
No Way Home Producer on Spider-Man Portrayals
In an interview with Fandango, Spider-Man: No Way Home producer Amy Pascal was asked about how Tom Holland's rendition of Spider-Man has differed in comparison to previous portrayals by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Pascal had praise for all three actors, saying that they each "brought their own kind of humanity to the character." The Sony producer singled Holland's performance in particular though for "[embodying] everything about Peter Parker that everybody was looking for:"
"I think each of the actors brought their own kind of humanity to the character. All of them are brilliant and Tom is singular. I think that he's embodied everything about Peter Parker that everybody was looking for. He's funny and charming and... a fantastic athlete and a wonderful actor, and he has such humanity."
Tom Holland Vs. Andrew Garfield & Tobey Maguire
Thus far, each live-action version of Spider-Man has been quite different, despite all three actors portraying the same character.
Tobey Maguire had a more sensitive Peter Parker combined with a more reserved Spidey, whereas Andrew Garfield's cooler Peter portrayal of Peter matched his abrasive and quick-witted wallcrawler.
Tom Holland utilizes all the best parts of each of these previous portrayals whilst juxtaposing a more youthful and gleeful spirit with a vulnerable side when the going gets way too tough. Holland's version also shines due to his ability to interplay with so many other Marvel characters, enabling viewers to see previously unseen sides of the webslinger on-screen.
If Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield do rear their webheads in the Spider-Man threequel, fans will be able to see the differences in each of the actors' portrayals and the nuances that they infuse into their versions. Organic web fluid isn't the only attribute that sets Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man apart, after all.
Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in theaters on December 17, 2021.
