DC FanDome delivered this year with plenty of exciting reveals and one of those was for Zachary Levi’s Shazam! sequel.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods sees Levi return as the main hero alongside Asher Angel who plays his alter ego Billy Batson. The Shazam! family, who were revealed at the end of the first movie, will also be back for more in the sequel.
This time around the god-like heroes will be taking on some gods themselves as Hollywood legends Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu join the cast. Thanks to DC FanDome we now have our first proper look at how Shazam! Fury of the Gods will play out.
First Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Footage Revealed
The first behind-the-scenes footage of Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been revealed at 2021's DC FanDome.
The sneak preview showed the return of Zachary Levi as the titular hero as well some new locations including Athens, the Library of Eternity and the realm of the Gods, and new mythological creatures like dragons and harpies.
One of the highlights of the preview also showed Helen Mirren as the villain in Shazam 2.
Helen Mirren will be playing supervillain Hespera who is based on the character from Greek mythology.
Lucy Liu will also star alongside Mirren as her sister Kalypso.
The full preview of footage from Shazam! Fury of the Gods can be seen below.
Helen Mirren Makes Her DC Debut
There’s plenty to unpack from that action-packed set footage, but the main event is definitely Mirren and Liu.
Both actresses looked absolutely powerhouse in their costumes on-set and Levi praised them both as being “incredible” and “kick-ass” villains. Mirren seemed equally excited to be part of it all saying Shazam! Fury of the Gods “has it all”.
Hespera and Kalypso are daughters of the god Atlas in Greek mythology, so they will undoubtedly be formidable foes for the Shazam! family. A third sister is also expected to appear in the sequel, most likely played by Rachel Ziegler, but casting is still a secret for now.
The footage also showed an upgrade in the suits of the Shazam! Heroes and the team promised the sequel would have bigger action and bigger set pieces.
Some of this was shown in the behind-the-scenes trailer including concept art featuring iconic locations like Athens and the realm of the Gods, which included a giant gold statue of Atlas himself. There was also a glimpse at some action-packed sequences involving flipping cars and actors flying around on wires.
There’s no doubt fans have plenty to look forward to when Shazam! Fury of the Gods is released in 2023.
