In addition to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals, Marvel Studios intends to introduce other new characters into the MCU in the coming years, but one, in particular, has fans already asking questions.
Disney's 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox brought another comic book persona into the fold - Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. However, due to Deadpool's unique style and R-rating, audiences speculated if the wisecracking hero would be integrated into the MCU at all.
Those questions were seemingly put to rest when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed Deadpool 3's development; however, Ryan Reynolds' latest social media post may have thrown the timeline for the threequel into question.
Will Ryan Reynolds' "Sabbatical" Affect Deadpool 3?
In an Instagram post about his upcoming Christmas film Spirited, Ryan Reynolds claims that now is the "perfect time for a little sabbatical from movie making" leaving fans to wonder if Deadpool 3 will be the actor's next film upon his return.
In addition to a selection of photos of the Apple TV+ film's cast and crew, Reynolds' social media post reads as follows:
"That’s a wrap for me on Spirited. Not sure I’d have been ready to say yes to a film this challenging even three years ago. Singing, dancing and playing in the sandbox with Will Ferrell made a whole lotta dreams come true. And this is my second film with the great Octavia Spencer...Perfect time for a little sabbatical from movie making. I’m gonna miss every second working with this obscenely gifted group of creators and artists. These days, kindness matters as much as talent. I’ve been lucky to work with folks who are flush with both."
Reynolds' Break Means Deadpool Script is Complete?
Even though Kevin Feige confirmed Deadpool 3's development and its penciled-in release, he didn't reveal just when that release would be; although, in the weeks following that interview, Disney did reveal its updated 2024 slate with 4 to-be-announced MCU films.
This led to speculation that Deadpool 3 would likely fill one of those slots as a Phase 5 project for the studio. In addition, Feige confirmed that the threequel's "script is in the works" and that star Ryan Reynolds "is working very hard on it with our writers as we speak."
Of course, taking a break while in the middle of working on a script is strange timing, particularly for Marvel Studios, where planning and scheduling are paramount to the overarching story. Therefore, it's possible that the actor's announcement means he's finished writing Deadpool 3, and the film is ready to move forward when Marvel's schedule allows.
Since Fox's former property of Fantastic Four was confirmed for development during 2020's Disney Investor Day, it's possible that fans may hear about Deadpool 3 during "Disney Plus Day" on November 12, 2021.
