When What If...? was first announced, the idea alone was exciting. Every Marvel Studios movie ever made was on the table, and the stories from those possible options alone were endless.
Even with episodes that fans have had so far, there's so much that hasn't been touched upon. For example, there weren't any alternate timelines featuring the likes of Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Endgame, or Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Clearly, there's still plenty to work with when it comes to the Infinity Saga. That said, fans can't help but think about all the new possibilities Marvel's Phase 4 of projects could present. With new characters such as Shang-Chi and the Eternals—the opportunities are going to keep multiplying.
But when it comes to new storytelling territory, what can audiences expect going into season 2?
What If Shang-Chi and the Eternals Joined the Party?
While talking about the upcoming finale for What If...? with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel head writer A.C. Bradley was able to tease what fans might be able to expect for Season 2.
She mentioned that the team will be "sticking with [the] anthology form" and that she hopes to "see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters:"
"Going into the second season, we're sticking with anthology form, and it's going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were obviously able to this season... hopefully, we'll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters. The fun of What If...? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try and bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we've got to share the love. I'm very excited to show new worlds, new heroes."
More Stories to Come in Season 2
It's no surprise to learn that characters such as ones from the Eternals, Shang-Chi, and the Black Widow crew are all in the crosshair for next season. It would have been odd if they weren't.
The real question is how much the team is considering touching upon the stories told in the Disney+ projects. Imagine episodes featuring Wanda's Westview if it had grown to a wider scale or if Loki actually took the deal that He Who Remains presented him.
People thought the Infinity Saga was a lot to choose from; now with the added shows to the roster, the writers over on What If...? are going to have their hands full.
Fans will have to trust that the team will choose the best and most interesting opportunities they can see, even if it doesn't include their favorite projects. Hopefully, with all of these additional ones to choose from, Marvel Studios will see fit to add more episodes per season and potentially make them longer as well.
Until then, fans still have one more episode of the first season to go. How will The Watcher beat Infinity Ultron? Find out when the finale airs on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 on Disney+.
