Lucasfilm has confirmed at least four Star Wars projects scheduled for release in 2027. Star Wars has been an important brand under Disney's umbrella, though in recent years its output of live-action and animated series, as well as theatrical releases, has varied. However, in 2027, Star Wars will be back and stronger than ever with at least one new release across all of these formats.

2026 saw Star Wars return to theaters after seven years with The Mandalorian & Grogu, which had mixed results. Meanwhile, animation came back in a big way for Star Wars on Disney+ with the new series, Maul: Shadow Lord, and Star Wars Visions Presents: The Ninth Jedi. 

Looking ahead, 2027 is primed to be an even bigger and better year for Lucasfilm film, TV, and animation, with several major Star Wars releases now confirmed following Disney's D23 Expo in 2026.

Star Wars is bringing back Captain Rex in a major 2026 project, underscoring the character's importance to the galaxy far, far away. Star Wars introduced Captain Rex first in animated form in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series as a prominent clone trooper of the 501st Legion who served as second-in-command to Anakin Skywalker and as a close ally of Ahsoka Tano. Following his debut, Rex remained a consistent part of major Star Wars stories, with his evolution continuing into the Clone Wars animated series, Star Wars Rebels, The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, and, most recently, a live-action flashback cameo in Ahsoka Season 1 in 2023. 

Star Wars officially confirmed Captain Rex's return in 2026 in Star Wars: Zero Company via its new final trailer. 

Set to release on August 27, the upcoming turn-based tactics game from Bit Reactor in collaboration with Respawn Entertainment takes place during the twilight of the Clone Wars, so it makes sense that Rex will play a part in the game's narrative. 

Concept art from Season 2 of Dave Filoni's Ahsoka gave fans a first look at Ezra Bridger and other characters appearing in the Disney+ follow-up. The new season, which was initially expected to arrive this year, was delayed to early 2027, a development Lucasfilm made official at Disney's Upfronts presentation in May. The second season will pick up where the first left off, with Sabine Wren and Ahsoka stranded on Peridea while Ezra and Grand Admiral Thrawn made their way back to the main galaxy.

The artwork was unveiled during the D23 Expo hosted at the Anaheim Convention Center in California on August 14. The event is Disney's biennial fan expo where the studio makes major announcements and reveals. Costume pieces on display even showcased Anakin Skywalker's snow gear from the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars era, suggesting the season will feature flashbacks to that period of Ahsoka and Anakin's lives. Some of the concept pieces were first previewed exclusively at Star Wars Celebration 2025, but D23 marked the first public viewing for most fans.

Ahsoka Season 2 Characters Unveiled at Disney's D23 Expo

D23 time has come again, and Disney's Entertainment Showcase included a slew of announcements for upcoming Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney releases. The biennial convention has taken over the Anaheim Convention Center with a show floor dedicated to all of Disney's major brands and a weekend of programming that lifts the lid on what the House of Mouse has in store for the future of film, streaming, theme parks, and more.

Marvel Studios made a splash at the event with a booth promoting major MCU releases like Avengers: Doomsday and VisionQuest, and fans received major updates on these projects, as well as news regarding the X-Men movie reboot, during the studio's Friday night showcase.

Fans also received news on the upcoming Star Wars projects, Ahsoka Season 2 and Star Wars: Starfighter, Pixar's newest releases, including Gatto, and the long-awaited Simpsons movie sequel, which drew attention on the D23 show floor.

Luke Skywalker is back on-screen thanks to a new Disney+ special. The Jedi Master, most notably played by Mark Hamill, has had a life far beyond the original Star Wars movie trilogy, with Skywalker showing up in novels, video games, and some of Star Wars' live-action TV series. Fans will see Luke Skywalker next in an unexpected Disney+ special, dedicated to The Mandalorian.

Disney+ recently released a trailer for its upcoming special, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, which is set to release on the streamer on September 2nd. The project is something of a re-telling of The Mandalorian, the live-action Star Wars series which ran for three seasons on Disney+ before transitioning to the big screen in The Mandalorian & Grogu. The original series is now being commemorated in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, which also includes Luke Skywalker's memorable appearance in the show.

The trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is a crash course in some of The Mandalorian's most iconic moments, and naturally, that contingent has to include the appearance of the original Star Wars hero himself. Skywalker appeared in a surprise cameo in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, arriving on Moff Gideon's ship to slice through Dark Troopers and collect Grogu for his Jedi training. 

A dark chapter in the Star Wars franchise brought about by a controversial Jedi is ready to write a new page. Lucasfilm didn't put all of its eggs in the 2026 basket. Outside of releasing Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu and a few animated series, it mostly took it easy this year, saving most of its ammunition for 2027, which will see the release of Star Wars: Starfighter and Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2.

One of the last big projects set in a galaxy far, far away in 2026 is Star Wars: Zero Company, a turn-based video game that follows a group of mercenaries active during the Clone Wars. Of course, the conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Separatists is one of the most important in the franchise's history, as it paves the way for the rise of the Galactic Empire. With that being the case, Zero Company can't help but reference important locations and characters.

Disney+'s Ahsoka Season 2 unveiled a new winter costume for its titular Jedi hero. With almost two decades of regular Star Wars appearances under her belt through The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and her Disney+ solo series, Ahsoka Tano has sported many looks through the years. The former Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker will officially be gaining some new ones when she returns in the live-action Ahsoka Season 2 in early 2027.

Disney's bi-annual D23 Expo is officially underway, and costumes for Ahsoka Season 2 are on display at the Anaheim event ahead of new updates and reveals from the Star Wars series' return. Morai the Messenger captured shots of some of these costumes on Disney+, including a brand-new red, wintery costume for the titular Ahsoka Tano herself that will feature in the 2027 season.

Although many Star Wars fans are looking forward to the premiere of Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi in August, Maul actor Sam Witwer recently gave an update on the status of Maul - Shadow Lord Season 2, and it is nothing short of exciting. Maul - Shadow Lord Season 1 was a roaring success in the eyes of fans and critics, so naturally, everyone is patiently waiting for any news regarding the next installment of the story. Lucasfilm officially announced that Shadow Lord would be returning for a second season before Season 1 debuted on Disney+, and Witwer himself revealed that the second season had been in the works for quite some time, even before it was announced.

Maul actor Sam Witwer, who has portrayed the character for many years now across multiple productions, recently made an appearance at Fan Expo Anaheim, where he talked at length about Maul - Shadow Lord Season 2. Witwer teased that a specific piece of content in the upcoming season is one of his favorite moments he has ever had with the character, while giving his general thoughts on a certain part of Season 2.

Specifically, Witwer was asked about previously revealing that he had a new favorite Maul line of all time. Notably, the actor stated that the line is uttered in "another season" of Maul - Shadow Lord, instead of in Season 1, which was released earlier in the year. Witwer explained that "there's a really good line" that he is hoping is "in Season 2."

Lucasfilm is reportedly piloting Star Wars back toward its Harrison Ford roots for a 2027 release. The franchise just returned to theaters for the first time since 2019 with The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the reaction was mixed at best, with critics and the box office both landing with a thud. That underwhelming showing comes during a turning point for Disney's Lucasfilm as it figures out where to take the franchise next. Now, a new comment claims the studio's next tentpole film, coming out next year, is set to harken back to the Original Trilogy era.

IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond appeared on Matt Belloni's The Town podcast and revealed he visited the set of Star Wars: Starfighter. The upcoming Star Wars movie was filmed from August 28, 2025, to December 18, 2025.

Gelfond's excitement was recently echoed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's own praise for the film at San Diego Comic-Con, and it came with a detail hinting at what the movie might actually feel like.

Ahsoka Season 2 is officially the next Star Wars project lined up for release. The live-action TV spin-off follows Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's former apprentice, who was introduced in the animated series The Clone Wars. After Rosario Dawson debuted as the live-action version of the character in The Mandalorian, and subsequently her own show, Ahsoka, audiences have been eager to see what happens next to the Jedi.

It's been almost a four-year wait for Season 2 of Ahsoka after Season 1 finished airing in October 2023, but recently Disney finally confirmed the Star Wars show would be back in early 2027. This officially makes Ahsoka Season 2 the next Star Wars release. Fans were recently treated to the anime series Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi, which was the only release from Lucasfilm's sci-fi universe on the slate before Ahsoka. 

Star Wars has already had a big 2026, with The Mandalorian & Grogu releasing in theaters in May and the new animated series, Maul - Shadow Lord, streaming on Disney+ in April. The Ninth Jedi rounds out the list of upcoming Star Wars releases for 2026, and the next thing fans will have to look forward to is Ahsoka's sophomore season in 2027.

Star Wars has been defined as much by its superweapons as by lightsabers and the Force. These immense instruments of destruction, most notably the Death Star, embody the Dark Side's obsession with absolute power, turning fear into a weapon of galactic scale. Over decades of storytelling, both in canon and in alternate versions of the universe, Star Wars has raised the stakes with increasingly terrifying iterations of the same concept. 

Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi, a non-canon Star Wars project, continues the tradition by introducing a powerful new superweapon called the Kyber Cannon. This weapon, forged by Nawaam and his forces, is powered by a massive kyber crystal harvested from Hy Izlan and mounted aboard the warlord's flagship, the Fort Dominion. The Kyber Cannon's debut in The Ninth Jedi serves as the fifth superweapon in Star Wars lore, joining a list of superweapons that also harness kyber crystals to amplify energy into planet-destroying beams.

Star Wars: Starfighter will abandon one of the most divisive parts of Disney's sequel trilogy. Directed by Shawn Levy and led by Ryan Gosling, the film is Lucasfilm's next theatrical release, set to arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027. The studio unveiled the project at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo last year and described it as an original adventure set roughly five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, making it the latest story in the franchise's timeline.

Screenwriter Jonathan Tropper confirmed that Starfighter requires no familiarity with any previous Star Wars film, a clean break from the sequel trilogy's reliance on the saga's past. Tropper revealed the approach during an appearance on The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast, and his comments signal how differently Lucasfilm is treating its next big-screen outing.

The next trilogy set in a galaxy far, far away might be heading to theaters sooner rather than later. Star Wars hasn't had much to write home about in recent years. While Lucasfilm's animated series have been hits with critics and fans alike, the same can't be said about the company's movies. 

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu hit theaters earlier this year. It had plenty going for it, continuing a story that had been the belle of the Disney+ ball. Regardless, the movie crashed and burned harder than the second Death Star at the box office. At the end of its theatrical run, the Jon Favreau-directed project brought home $345.2 million worldwide, the lowest mark for a live-action Star Wars film.

There's little doubt that the powers that be at Lucasfilm expected better from The Mandalorian & Grogu. However, they didn't put all their eggs in one basket. Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, is getting great buzz ahead of its 2027 release date. And that's not the only positive development for Dave Filoni and Co.

The first-ever official crossover between Marvel and Star Wars received an exciting look ahead of its 2027 release. For years, the idea of a full-blown Marvel and Star Wars crossover remained one of the "what ifs" from pop culture. Although Marvel published the original Star Wars comics starting in 1977, the heroes of Earth-616 never crossed paths with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader. Even after Disney acquired both Lucasfilm and Marvel, the two universes stayed completely separate, aside from some occasional Easter eggs, such as Eternals' historic Star Wars reference and a fleeting TIE fighter cameo in the penultimate episode of What If...? Season 1. 

Entertainment Weekly revealed the first look at the historic crossover between the Star Wars and Marvel Comics universe titled Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles. Set to launch in January 2027 (with issues monthly through May), the upcoming five-issue limited series is written by actor and director Kevin Smith with art by David Marquez (Uncanny X-Men and Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man). 

Ahsoka Season 2 takes place in an interesting part of the Star Wars timeline where there aren't an abundance of Jedi, as there were before the fall of the Republic, but there are still plenty of notable ones who are quite powerful. Ahsoka Season 2 has not even been released yet, and it is already climbing the ranks of the most frustrating piece of Star Wars media ever. Season 1 came out all the way back in 2023, and with complete uncertainty surrounding Season 2's release, it could be almost four years in between installments by the time it premieres.

Still, when it does air, fans will be transported back to the galaxy far, far away for part of the story, and then to Peridea, which is outside of the main Star Wars galaxy, for the other part of the story. Across both plotlines, there will be multiple Jedi and Force users, including Ahsoka herself, Ezra Bridger, Baylan Skoll, and, according to rumors, the Mortis gods.

However, the Jedi and Force users who will show up in Ahsoka Season 2 aren't the only ones in the galaxy. During that era on the Star Wars timeline, there are other Jedi who are spread across the universe, some of whom are even more powerful than anyone who will be in the upcoming season of the Disney+ show.

A major moment in history is reportedly happening in 2027, as rumors suggest that Star Wars and Marvel are going to officially collaborate for a major project that will highlight both brands and potentially lead to more team-up content. It is no secret that the galaxy far, far away and the Marvel universe are two of the biggest IPs in the world, and have been for some time. Since Disney owns Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, and therefore the rights to all Star Wars characters and a lot of Marvel characters, there is nothing stopping Disney from bringing the two franchises together officially in some sort of crossover project, and that is exactly what may be happening.

According to a recent rumor, as shared via Instagram by @buggyleaks, LEGO is going to release a full set sometime in 2027 that will be a crossover between Marvel and Star Wars. Specifically, the rumor details that the set will be titled "Iron Falcon," and will be a version of the Millennium Falcon with Iron Man's nanotech on it. There have been no images released of the set yet, nor any confirmation from LEGO that it is actually something in the works, but it is heavily rumored.

Notably, the Iron Man influence on the Millennium Falcon won't be the only part of Marvel added to the set, as the Minifigures that will reportedly be included are also crossovers between Marvel and Star Wars. For example, the report revealed that the five Minifigures that will be with the set are going to be Iron-3PO, War2-D2, Spider-Han, Captain Alderaan, and Hulkbacca. 

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy actor John Boyega revealed his hopes for Finn to be trained as a Jedi under Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu. Finn's Force-sensitivity is one of the most intriguing yet ultimately underdeveloped threads in the last chapter of the Skywalker Saga. From the moment the former stormtrooper picked up a lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and held his own against Kylo Ren, the remaining movies dropped subtle hints about his potential ascension to a Jedi, such as Kylo's awareness of him, his instinctive connection to other Force users, and the lingering ramifications of his defection from The First Order's conditioning. During the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the idea is teased more explicitly when Finn begins to confess something crucial to Rey about his connection to the Force, only for the moment to be cut short. 

Speaking at an exclusive panel at Rebel Scum Con 2026 (via Star Wars Holocron), John Boyega expressed his hope that a future Star Wars project would finally let Finn embrace his Jedi path, specifically under the mentorship of Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu (not Rey Skywalker).

Finn's long-standing Force-sensitivity journey has had its fair share of ups and downs. In an interview in August 2022, Boyega claimed that The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams forced Finn's Jedi twist: 

Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, many fans agree that the company has not been able to quite capture the essence of Star Wars better than the creator of the franchise himself, George Lucas. Disney has produced some extremely successful and objectively good pieces of Star Wars media since 2015. The Force Awakens is the highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office of all time. The Mandalorian helped launch Disney+ and make the streaming service what it is today. Andor has been praised by both critics and fans as one of the greatest stories ever told in fiction.

Star Wars has been one of modern storytelling's juggernauts since George Lucas created the franchise in 1977 with a film that, at the time, was simply called Star Wars (now known as A New Hope). A lot of fans have mixed opinions about the direction Disney has taken the universe, but every now and then (like with The Mandalorian and Andor), pretty much everyone agrees that a project is great. In some cases (looking at you, Rise of Skywalker), nearly everyone agrees that it's not so great.

Star Wars would not be where it is today without the story of Anakin Skywalker. Lucas spent three feature films telling the story of that character's fall to the Dark Side of the Force, and then three more movies explored his redemption. Between all of that, more media, such as the animated, seven-season Clone Wars series, added even more layers to the overall story. The story of Anakin and Darth Vader was always the central point of Lucas' Star Wars story, and what a fantastic story it is. 

Star Wars' MandoVerse era is winding down much sooner than anyone saw coming. The Mandalorian and Grogu hit theaters earlier this year, a release that carried significant weight for the franchise: it was the first Star Wars film since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker and the first time the MandoVerse, the post-Return of the Jedi timeline built out across Disney+ series like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew, made it to the big screen. That achievement should have led to the start of a bigger cinematic chapter, but the exact opposite appears to be happening.

The clearest evidence that the MandoVerse is fading came straight from Disney. During an August 5 earnings call, CEO Josh D'Amaro admitted that The Mandalorian and Grogu "didn't meet our box office expectations," a diplomatic way of describing a film that finished its run with $345.2 million worldwide, the lowest total of any Star Wars movie ever released, surpassing even 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story.  CFO Hugh Johnston chalked the miss up to Disney's broader "portfolio game," but the underlying message was hard to miss: audiences are over the MandoVerse.

Lucasfilm has re-canonized a beloved element from a non-canon Star Wars video game by bringing back a major weapon in a hit Disney+ series. Andor, the prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, pushed Cassian Andor to the forefront before his eventual sacrifice on the big screen. As a Rebel operative and saboteur, Andor relies on a plethora of weapons to get the job done, such as scavenged blasters and explosives, before eventually settling on his signature sidearm that becomes central to his identity: a blaster pistol. 

Lucasfilm, via The Art of Andor, confirmed that Cassian Andor's blaster pistol is inspired by the Bryar pistol from Star Wars: Dark Forces, a 1995 video game that is no longer canon and part of the Legends continuity. In the game, it serves as Kyle Katarn's trusty weapon.
