The next time fans see The Guardians of the Galaxy will be in Thor: Love and Thunder next year. While the exact role they play in the film isn't known, the group will at the very least be a part of it. After all, given where Endgame left off, it would almost be a crime not to include the group in Thor's fourth solo adventure.
Spiraling out of that film will be The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a Disney+ project that is certainly intriguing, but next to no information is known about what it will entail. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was able to confirm recently that he feels it to be required viewing for the group's third film: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Not much is known about the long-gestating third project in the Guardians trilogy either, but the insane scope that it will apparently have has been teased more than once. The script has even made several cast members cry when they read it.
While the film has yet to start production, it seems that Marvel Studios has found its producer for the project.
GUARDIANS OF THE PRODUCER
During an interview with The Direct, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Marvel Studios producer Jonathan Schwartz cleared the air on who is really producing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
According to Schwartz (and later confirmed by Disney), "it's [his] colleague Sara Smith" who is set as the executive producer on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
“It’s a common misconception that I’m producing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, I’m actually not. It’s my colleague Sara Smith, she’s gonna be the producer on that one."
Sara Smith can be seen walking across the stage at Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con 2019 along with the rest of Marvel Studios' top dogs, so it would seem that she has plenty of experience working with the MCU.
As for Schwartz, the rest of his quote confirmed that instead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the producer's next project is set to be Secret Invasion.
VOL. 3 COMING RIGHT UP
The excitement for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 likely hasn't hit many fans just yet; after all the development journey that the film has been through to this point has been an intense one.
But with James Gunn done with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, all of his attention has now turned back to the MCU. Production is set to begin sometime later this year, but casting has already begun, with a recent casting call looking for short/small men and women—a casting which likely belongs to some new alien race being introduced in the film.
The film is set to be Gunn's final adventure with the team that he pulled out of obscurity back in 2014 with the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. With that being the case, fans should strap in and expect a wild ride. There's no doubt that James Gunn is aiming to go out with a bang.
