Marvel Studios' Phase 4 is growing more expansive with every project, whether it's a new property or a sequel to stories established during the Infinity Saga. This includes giving more depth to MCU's cosmic realm in films such as James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is the director's next big task after finishing his work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros.
Gunn's work with the Guardians has set them up as key players in upcoming years, as they will play a role in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder and their own Holiday Special before the solo threequel. With two thrilling adventures through the cosmos as a team and two other major team-ups with the Avengers, Guardians 3 is looking to be a journey filled with challenges unlike any they've faced before.
While no details are known about the story thus far, Gunn is hard at work developing likely the team's final run together for the foreseeable future. Recently, Gunn teased the exact scale of that story while talking about his approach to making it happen.
GUNN'S BIGGEST MCU ADVENTURE YET
Director James Gunn spoke with Brandon Davis of ComicBook about the challenge of working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after next month's premiere of The Suicide Squad.
Gunn expressed how the Guardians movies for the MCU "are just different," forcing him to use different parts of his directing repertoire to complete his work. Additionally, he teased how Vol.3 "is just gigantic" and how he's working hard to finish what he started with the trilogy:
"Listen, Guardians movies are just different. It's just using a different part of my brain in some ways,. I mean, Guardians movies are more geometric. This Guardians, in particular, is just gigantic, so I'm just finishing the story that I feel like I need to finish."
A GIGANTIC GUARDIANS ADVENTURE
James Gunn is never one to be shy about teasing what's coming in his new movies, and he always finds a way to build hype without realizing too many plot details, if any at all. The case is the same this time around, especially with him hinting at just how much is planned for the 2023 threequel.
The Guardians franchise took the MCU's cosmic side of storytelling to a new expansion in 2014, which has only continued with Vol. 2 and the galactic movies and characters that followed. After the team left with Thor in tow in the closing moments of Avengers: Endgame, the stage appears to be set for something even more epic.
Guardians Vol. 3 is particularly a mystery in terms of story with two other movies featuring the galactic misfits preceding it along with the fact that they won't have been seen for 3 years in real-time when they return. However, fans can rest easy knowing that Marvel is on top of bringing the "gigantic" adventure the team deserves.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will release in theaters on May 5, 2023.
