Marvel Studios has more than a handful of sequels lined up for their Phase 4 slate, continuing stories for heroes established during the Infinity Saga. The group of nearly two dozen upcoming entries even includes three different threequels in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, followed by both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023.
Director James Gunn is currently putting the final touches on his first DCEU movie, The Suicide Squad, which will debut in August before he transitions back to his iconic MCU franchise. His team of galactic misfits has a huge couple of years planned, with their own Holiday Special and an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder before what's been said to be their final solo movie.
However, Gunn's most recent round on social media may tease that he's not quite finished with the MCU yet.
A FOURTH GUARDIANS MOVIE IN PLAY?
An MCU fan asked both director James Gunn and Drax actor Dave Bautista on Twitter if they would do a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie given the opportunity.
Gunn admitted that he sees Vol. 3 "as the end of the Guardians' story" he's been telling since their first movie in 2014, but he did tease the possibility of continuing by saying "never say never":
Me? Never say never but I see Vol 3 as the end of the Guardians’ story I started telling back with Vol 1. https://t.co/q6iuqWoSgQ
THE END MAY BE FURTHER THAN EXPECTED
James Gunn took the Guardians of the Galaxy and turned them into a hit movie franchise back in 2014. He found similar success financially and critically with Vol. 2 in 2017 before helping their story continue in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as an executive producer.
Gunn has mentioned more than once that he sees Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as his final outing with Marvel after what will have been a nine-year run. However, playing such an important role with the franchise as a whole seems to have a special place in his memory even before kicking into high gear on the upcoming threequel.
With Vol. 3 still being two years away from release, it's difficult to predict what Disney and Marvel's plans are for the galactic team after summer 2023. These quotes do leave the door open for their story to continue, especially if Gunn decides to stay on board for the foreseeable future.
For now, fans wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to release on May 5, 2023.
