James Gunn has been through the ringer. After having been fired from Marvel Studios/Disney due to backlash in regard to tweets from his past, he was finally re-hired years later, but with another project in tow.
During his time in exile from Marvel, Warner Bros had approached him with the opportunity to write and direct a film for DC. Naturally, he accepted. Thus, the existence of the upcoming The Suicide Squad film .
On top of his sudden departure from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , Gunn's work on The Suicide Squad continued to delay the next adventure for fans' favorite band of space misfits even more. While that's given him more time, within that same span the ideas for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and I Am Groot came to be. With those two projects aimed to be filmed/produced alongside the upcoming third Guardian's film, Gunn is in for an insane amount of work.
Even after all of that, thinking about what may come after just can't be helped. Thankfully, a fan took to Twitter to ask him just that.
WHAT COMES AFTER GUARDIANS?
Twitter user @Kwill1356 took to the social media platform to ask James Gunn what his future at Marvel looks like.
Do you plan on working with Marvel after Gradians 3?
Guardians 3 will be years of working seven days a week on two movies, a TV series, a TV special, a Disney parks ride & more. I have no plans for anything after that & hope to refrain from having plans after that for the time being, other than a long nap. https://t.co/qx6ss1Tupp
James Gunn doesn't outright say he is never working from Marvel again, but he does make it clear that he hasn't put any thought into it—noting that after all the work he will be doing for Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 will be enough for a long time.
A BREAK FROM THE GUARDIANS
It's no surprise that James Gunn feels this way. Gunn has been constantly working on Suicide Squad as well as Peacemaker , with what seems to be little to no breaks. Then to have to immediately jump back into the MCU right after finishing up those two projects, only to have this workload potentially tripled, is a lot to handle.
One can only hope that the insane workload that Gunn is carrying won't bite him in the ass. It would be quite the shame if after all of these years—potentially six of them—if Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 ends up not being the movie the fans all hope it becomes. There's an enormous amount of expectations placed on that film, expectations that will likely leak into the anticipation for The Holiday Special , and I am Groot .
While Gunn has voiced that he doesn't want to direct an Avengers film for Marvel , with how close he has become to the Guardians and that world, it would be shocking if he doesn't come back in some fashion. It's likely near impossible to walk away from a story, world, and characters that you've put your very soul into like he has. At the very least, fans can likely expect him to always have a voice in regard to the characters he brought to the screen.
