Director James Gunn has spent the last few years building his resume to unexpected levels, particularly through his work in the comic book movie universe. After delivering an unexpected hit franchise for Marvel Studios with the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, with Vol. 3 close to starting filming, Gunn then took his talents to Warner Bros. for 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

Gunn’s work on the soft reboot garnered a great deal of success for Warner Bros as it became one of the highest-rated DC movies ever made, including ranking second in the DC Extended Universe on Rotten Tomatoes. Prior to the film even releasing, Gunn was already hard at work directing and producing the Peacemaker spin-off with John Cena, which will arrive on HBO Max in January 2022.

After Gunn finishes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel, it’s becoming clear that he has a bright future developing more superhero projects within the DCEU for Warner Bros. While no specifics are known about his venture, he recently teased that he’s with the studio for the long haul.

For the first time, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn acknowledged on social media that he's working on a new secret project for Warner Bros. within the DC Extended Universe.

Responding to a fan who asked Gunn if he's "developing a new DCEU project," Gunn simply answered "yes." Another fan asked if the entry was "Deadshot vs Bloodsport," although Gunn confirmed that it was "something else" and revealed that it won't be shown off at DC FanDome since "it’s not ready yet" for promotion.

Guardians Director Going Full DCEU

James Gunn isn’t one to hide his visions for the future of the comic book movie industry, whether it be with the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Suicide Squad, or any other characters.

With Season 1 of Peacemaker currently in the editing process, the director has already spoken about ideas he has for the show's second season if and when it becomes a reality. Although there are no specific signs pointing to what this new project could be, there is no shortage of material for Gunn to oversee.

Earlier in 2021, Gunn spoke about already having had discussions with Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie about working together again after their time together on The Suicide Squad. Although Robbie's next DCEU outing is currently a mystery, she stands as one of the franchise's most prominent characters, and Warner Bros. isn't likely to move on from Harley's story anytime soon.

It seems likely that this is the same project as the one already confirmed by DC Films President Walter Hamada; the Guardians of the Galaxy director clearly has his path set with Warner Bros. for the foreseeable future.

James Gunn is currently in the storyboarding process for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will release for Marvel Studios in theaters on May 5, 2023.
