Fans have been waiting a long time for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the film was originally set to release on May 1, 2020. Not only was there a pandemic that would have gotten in the way of that, but director James Gunn was fired by Disney due to some controversial tweets.
Thankfully, that all got sorted out, and Gunn is back in the director's chair. After having released the successful and critically acclaimed DC movie The Suicide Squad and finished making Peacemaker, his attention is now focused solely on his conclusion for the Guardians.
Gunn has been all over Twitter talking about aspects of the upcoming project, such as how his sets are far too large for the new VFX technology The Volume, which The Mandalorian uses. He also recently congratulated newcomer Will Poulter, who is joining the MCU as Adam Warlock.
Now, the director has taken to social media to announce that filming has begun on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The Guardians of the Galaxy are Back
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn announced that the first day of shooting the third film in his space opera series has begun.
Gunn mentioned how "it's been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here:"
"It’s been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting #gotgvol3"
Included with the tweet was a photo of the cast alongside him. The photo includes Will Poulter, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillian, Sean Gunn, and seemingly unannounced cast member Chukwudi Iwuji.

Let The Guarding of the Galaxy Commence
It's almost surreal to see the entire cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy back together again—no less about to actually film their next adventure in the MCU.
Not only will they be working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but the cast and crew will be shooting The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special simultaneously. Marvel Studios certainly seems to be looking to make up for all of that lost time.
Thankfully, the world won't have to wait until then to see everyone's favorite gang of misfits. The crew is set to make an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is hitting theaters on July 8, 2022. It's not quite known how big of a role they will have in the proceedings, but whatever it is, it's certainly better than nothing.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set for release on May 5, 2023, and the Holiday Special is aimed for a holiday 2022 debut on Disney+.
