Outside of major comic book movie franchises like the MCU and the DCEU, almost no action franchise in history has a more storied run than the Fast & Furious movies. Having first come to theaters more than 20 years ago with The Fast and The Furious, these racing-centric action films have become a staple of this generation with more than $6.6 billion in theatrical revenue, one of the 10 biggest returns in history.
With nine movies already in the books, the Fast & Furious movies feature some of the biggest names in the industry, some of them for much more than a one-time deal. Guardians of the Galaxy mainstay Vin Diesel has seven appearances under his belt as Dom Toretto, while DCEU stars Dwayne Johnson and John Cena have shown up in a handful of their own Fast films.
Amongst 2023's massive output of blockbuster films, Universal is set to deliver the tenth movie in the Fast & Furious adventure, which will be the first of a two-part finale. Now, as the movie prepares for its lengthy production schedule, the team has enlisted one of Marvel Studios' biggest stars for her debut appearance in the street-racing saga.
Brie Larson Joins New Mega-Franchise
MCU star Vin Diesel took to Instagram to announce that Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson will join him for the tenth movie in the Fast & Furious franchise.
Diesel shared a selfie of the two of them, teasing that she will play a major role in the next movie in this long-standing series. Praising her "beauty," her "intellect," and even her award-filled resume, Diesel let the fans know that she will add "something you might not have expected but yearned for" as she joins the Fast & Furious franchise:
"Yeah yeah yeah… you see this angel over my shoulder cracking me up, you say to your self “ that’s captain Marvel”. Clearly there is love and laughter in this image. What you don’t see however, is the character you will be introduced to in Fast10. You have no idea how timeless and amazing she will be in our mythology. Beyond her beauty, her intellect… her Oscar, haha is this profound soul who will add something you might not have expected but yearned for.
Welcome to the FAMILY Brie."
Captain Marvel Meets Groot, Aquaman, & More
Along with Fast & Furious veterans like Ludacris and Morbius' Tyrese Gibson, both returning next to Diesel, Fast 10 is building an impressive cast of characters for the franchise's return to the big screen. Aquaman star Jason Momoa is set to play the movie's main villain while Cena reunites with one of his The Suicide Squad co-stars in Daniela Melchior.
Now, those three DC stars have a duo of Marvel mainstays alongside them with this new surprise addition the cast.
The Academy Award-winning Brie Larson is best known for her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the MCU, already with appearances in her own solo movie and Avengers: Endgame in 2019. She's also already completed filming for her solo sequel, The Marvels, set to arrive in theaters only three months before her first Fast & Furious film.
Larson is no stranger to major pop culture franchises, meaning she should be able to fit seamlessly into the picture for her next role in this action blockbuster. While her role is still yet to be announced, her presence alone only adds another level of firepower to a franchise looking to end on a high note.
Fast & Furious 10 will debut in theaters on May 19, 2023. Larson will also lead the way in Marvel Studios' The Marvels, which arrives on February 17, 2023.
