John Cena Shares Peacemaker Season 2 Announcement

Since joining the DC Extended Universe family last summer, James Gunn has been putting in career years. Gunn's take on The Suicide Squad was met with some of the highest reviews in Warner Bros. comic book movie history, and his record-time spin-off series, Peacemaker, has pulled the streaming spotlight away from entertainment superpower Disney+.

Over the course of five weeks, Peacemaker has held its own against simultaneously airing shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Euphoria. The John Cena-led series has been touted as arguably the best DCEU project, with some going as far as calling it the best comic book show in recent memory.

This love and support gave Gunn good feelings about a follow-up season. The director had joked that he and Cena have "87 seasons mapped out," and is eager to create more content with the 16-time WWE Champion.

While eight decades of Peacemaker remains unconfirmed, a sophomore installment is officially on the way.

Peacemaker Renewed For Second Season

They asked if we really wanted to taste it, and Warner Bros. ordered seconds.

Peacemaker creator and director James Gunn confirmed the series has been renewed for a Season 2. Gunn thanked both the "lovely friends at HBO Max" and "mostly all of [the fans]" for making a sophomore installment possible.

"That’s right, Peacemaker is coming back for Season Two. Thanks to Peter Safran, John Cena, our incredible cast & crew, our wildly supportive & lovely friends at HBO Max - and mostly all of you for watching!"

Leading man John Cena also expressed his excitement, calling Gunn's direction "absolutely genius."

"Learning about and eventually becoming PEACEMAKER was an exercise in exploring the fun and absolutely genius mind of James Gunn. It’s been a privilege to work on this show and with the cast, crew and HBO Max team. Elated to say we’ll be back to create more peace for Season 2!"

Gunn's fingerprints will once again be all over Peacemaker, with Season 2 being completely written and directed by the show's creator. The Guardians of the Galaxy director wrote all of Season 1, but only directed five of the eight episodes.

James Gunn and John Cena Reunite

Considering the social response to Peacemaker's first season, a follow-up does not come as much of a surprise. That said, the timing is noteworthy.

The announcement of a second season comes just hours before the first season's finale, "It's Cow or Never." With confirmation that more Christopher Smith is coming beyond Episode 8, there's reason to believe big Season 2 storyline teases could come in the finale. With Robert Patrick's Auggie Smith out of the way and Project Butterfly likely wrapping up in the next episode, plot points for Cena's sophomore installment are anyone's guess.

While specifics will likely remain unknown for many months, Peacemaker's show renewal spells good fortune for DC fans. The show represents what can happen when a creator is given complete creative freedom. Gunn delivering a strong return on investment and being rewarded with a second season indicates Warner Bros. is in a strong direction moving forward, which only means good things for fellow HBO Max DC projects like Batgirl and Green Lantern Corps.

Peacemaker's Season 1 finale airs this Thursday on HBO Max.
