Wonder Woman 1984 is set to get the ball rolling once more for the DCEU when it premieres in theaters (hopefully) this October. Originally set to be released this past June, the Gal Gadot-led sequel experienced numerous delays before settling in for a October premiere. Since then, the marketing efforts for the film have ramped up.
A slew of promo images for the film has surfaced online, teasing both the titular heroine's new powers and fresh looks at the sequel's villains. In conjunction with that, a spoiler-filled junior novelization of the film also arrived, teasing details about Steve Trevor's surprise resurrection as well as the debut of a powerful item from DC lore.
As October approaches, details about Wonder Woman 1984 are slowly coming together, and the arrival of the film's official synopsis may shed some more light on the much-anticipated sequel.
REPORT
Twitter user Luiz Fernando uncovered the official synopsis of Wonder Woman 1984 that was released in Japan:
Official synopsis of #WW84, released in #Japan today” “As an archaeologist, Diana who works at the #SmithsonianMuseum, is a wonder woman who has extraordinary superpowers, said to be the strongest hero in the world. In 1984, #WonderWoman is in desperate deadly danger...1/3 pic.twitter.com/oV9EvZc5KK
The synopsis teases the dangerous predicament of the Amazonian hero while also hinting at the "enormous conspiracy" that Maxwell Lord will bring to the world:
"As an archaeologist, Diana who works at the Smithsonian Museum, is a Wonder Woman who has extraordinary superpowers, said to be the strongest hero in the world. In 1984, Wonder Woman is in desperate deadly danger in face of an enormous conspiracy of the businessman Max, who sings loudly to fulfill people's desires, and a mysterious foe, Cheetah. Can Wonder Woman stop the world’s collapse alone?"
WHAT THIS MEANS
While the lone trailer and junior novelization might have already teased the film's plot, it seems that there are more secrets that have yet to be uncovered as evidenced by the sequel's official synopsis. On the surface, Diana will have her hands full during her second solo outing due to the menacing combination of Maxwell Lord and Cheetah. And now, the presence of a looming conspiracy should provide more challenge to the titular hero.
During 2016's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it was revealed that Wonder Woman shut herself off from the world, but the main reason behind it remains to be seen. It was believed back then that Steve Trevor's death during 2017's Wonder Woman was the true cause of the heroine's exile, but Wonder Woman 1984 shows that Diana is still in active duty since then. That said, there's a chance that the combined might of Lord and Cheetah as well as the "enormous conspiracy" during the film could finally explain why Diana stopped being an active hero.
Of course, this is pure speculation at this point. Though the junior novelization already featured some notable plot points, plenty remains unknown about the film. Hopefully, the upcoming DC FanDome event later this month can provide more details about Wonder Woman 1984 before it premieres to the silver screen.
