Following the 2016 hit release of Captain America: Civil War, many viewers were left wondering why Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk were absent from the hero-on-hero action. While this is canonically explained by the two being pre-occupied by the cataclysmic events of Thor: Ragnarok at the time, Marvel Studios decided to poke fun at the situation with a hilarious series of non-canon short films.
The trilogy of mockumentary shorts featured Australian actor Daley Pearson playing everyday working man Darryl Jacobson. Both the first two installments, Team Thor and Team Thor: Part 2, featured the God of Thunder living with Darryl while trying to fit into normal life on Earth after being excluded from the Avengers' in-fighting.
A third installment of the non-canon shorts came in the form of Team Darryl, which debuted on the Thor: Ragnarok home release. Chris Hemsworth's Avenger was swapped out for Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster as Darryl aids him in his ventures to rule Earth, just as he once did on Sakaar.
All three hilarious short films were directed by Taika Waititi and executive produced by Brad Winderbaum. As another Asgardian release rolls around in the form of Thor: Love and Thunder, it seems Darryl's MCU return could be in the works.
IS THOR'S ROOMMATE DARRYL RETURNING?
During a recent interview with Slash Film, What If...? executive producer Brad Winderbaum was asked if Team Thor's Darryl may return in a fourth short to bridge the gap between Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Winderbaum, who is producing Thor: Love and Thunder, initially played coy on the subject by asking if the interviewer was “talking about Darryl” and “saying [they] want more Darryl.” Eventually, the executive producer suggested in a teasing tone that viewers “might get more Darryl:”
“Well, maybe you might get more Darryl. It’s possible.”
WHO WILL BE DARRYL'S LATEST ROOMMATE?
Winderbaum will be returning to produce Thor: Love and Thunder, which makes his comments even more intriguing and lends to the idea that Taika Waititi may be cooking up another Darryl-centric short.
Assuming the potential fourth short would fill the gap between Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder, the God of Thunder will be off-world with the Guardians at the time, ruling him out as Darryl's next roommate. Each of the short films so far featured Darryl living his everyday life in a basic Earthbound apartment, so it could be interesting to take Darryl on an off-world adventure with the Guardians on the Milano.
However, it's entirely possible that Waititi may be restricted by budgetary limitations, therefore forcing him to keep Darryl trapped in his working man lifestyle. Should this be the case, Darryl may need to find himself a new super-powered roommate to help cover the bills.
Following their breakout roles in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame, the giant rock monster Korg and his adorable companion Miek could be the perfect choices to join Darryl in his cozy apartment.
In recent years, Hollywood has seen a drastic decline in the popularity of physical media home releases, meaning Marvel Studios may look for an alternate release method for the MCU's next mockumentary. As Disney+ continues to grow, perhaps Darryl's latest antics could drop directly on the streaming service in the run-up to Love and Thunder to further promote the blockbuster theatrical release.
Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
