Lucasfilm and Disney are in the midst of a massive popularity spike at the moment thanks to Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+. The franchise's immediate future is bright after such a positive reaction to Obi-Wan Kenobi's recently released first trailer, which brought McGregor back to his iconic role for the first time in 17 years.

That trailer found a way to keep most of the series' secrets hidden while giving fans a look at the former Jedi Master in his latest adventure during his exile on Tatooine. With the promise of an encounter with Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader and the exploration of new worlds, Obi-Wan Kenobi isn't lacking for exciting new moments.

The only question remaining after this trailer - will Obi-Wan Kenobi go past Season 1?

Even with the excitement and anticipation building for McGregor's solo Disney+ series, it's been billed as a limited series, meaning it was developed with only one season in mind.

However, according to a recent interview, that doesn't mean that the team behind the show isn't keeping its options open for more should they see an opportunity.

Obi-Wan's Possible Season 2 Prospects

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president and producer Kathleen Kennedy and Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow spoke about the prospects of the show getting a second season.

Chow confirmed that the show originated as a limited series and a complete adventure told in six episodes, regardless of what its future could hold:

"It was definitely conceived as a limited series, and it is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end. The approach has always been that it is one full story."

On the other hand, Kennedy is keeping the options for Season 2 on the table, largely due to how much fun everybody had making the show. While there are certainly possibilities for where to go with another round of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the biggest obstacle would be to answer the question of "why would we do it:"

"It's certainly something we talk about, mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end. But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it? If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we'd have to really answer the question why?"

Will Obi-Wan Kenobi Remain a Limited Series?

Throughout the promotional tour leading up to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucasfilm and Disney have been consistent about it being a limited series. But considering how much the studios are looking to expand on the Star Wars narrative through other shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, there are no limits to where Obi-Wan Kenobi could go.

The immediate task at hand is finding out where Season 1 goes for McGregor's hero as he looks to protect Luke Skywalker from his father on Tatooine. However, considering the unexplored time frame between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, there's an open canvas for the show's creatives to use for more Obi-Wan stories.

The biggest thing to take away from these quotes is that, no matter what happens in the future, Chow and Kennedy made sure to tell a full and complete story about Obi-Wan's return.

Season 1 will conclude at the end of June as fans and executives wait to see the reaction to what Obi-Wan tackles on Tatooine and across the galaxy. But however that turns out, there will be interest in a potential second season to see how it could expand even further following that time.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will debut on Disney+ on May 25, 2022.
