As part of the MCU's inaugural year of Disney+ series, which includes WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and the soon-to-be-released Hawkeye, Marvel Studios also dove into animation with What If...?.
With the Watcher as a guide, What If...?'s nine episodes embraced the Multiverse and explored what would happen if key events from the MCU films were changed.
The debut animated series introduced Captain Carter instead of Captain America, Black Panther's T'Challa as Star-Lord, Ultron with Infinity Stones, and even the Guardians of the Multiverse; and while a second season of the series was already a foregone conclusion, as part of Disney+ Day, Marvel chose to make it official while also teasing what's to come.
Marvel Studios' What If...? Season 2 Confirmed
As part of Disney+ Day, Marvel Studios confirmed Season 2 of the animated series What If...? is coming soon to the streaming service.
Alongside the reveal, the first official look at the animated show's logo for Season 2 was unveiled:
A second season for What If...? is anything but a surprise as the show's writer, A.C. Bradley, already teased a "weirder" Season 2 and that "another comedy episode" from Season 1 had been bumped to the sophomore season.
Bradley has also shared that she hopes to include characters from Black Widow, Eternals, and Shang-Chi in the upcoming season.
What If...? Paved the Way for Marvel Animation
While fans have yet to receive a release date for What If...?'s second season, the fact that Marvel debuted a new logo and teased that it's "coming soon" could mean it's headed for Disney+ earlier than expected.
It also appears that - despite What If...?'s somewhat mixed reviews - the animated series paved the way for more two-dimensional storytelling from the studio, as Marvel also announced Spider-Man: Freshman Year, X-Men '97, and Marvel Zombies during Disney+ Day.
Marvel Zombies is particularly interesting in that it could be a spin-off of What If...?'s fan-favorite fifth episode, where the Avengers struggled to survive a zombie apocalypse due to a Quantum Realm virus.
What If...? may also play into live-action MCU films and series, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige already teased potential live-action spin-offs of the animated show as well.
All episodes of Season 1 of What If...? are currently streaming on Disney+.
