While a number of movies and TV shows are finally coming back to restart shooting and production for Marvel Studios, there are so many more that are still in the earliest stages of planning and pre-production in Phase 4 and beyond. Some of these projects are still working on filling in roles for both in front of the camera and behind it.
One of the movies still a long time out from production is the highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange, especially considering what fans know about it so far, and after seeing the Sorcerer Supreme grow stronger and more incredible on screen over the last few years.
The production team for the sequel added a new member today, one who has an impressive history with comic book movies already...
NEWS
A new report from The Ronin shares that highly-acclaimed cinematographer John Mathieson has been hired for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He joins the team led by director Sam Raimi for the 2022 sequel, with both having extensive histories with comic book movies.
WHAT THIS MEANS
While fans may not know Mathieson’s name instantly, his resume is one of the most extensive of any cinematographer in recent memory. In the comic book universe alone, his credits include work on both X-Men: First Class and the critically acclaimed Logan. He also led photography on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Detective Pikachu in the last five years.
Mathieson joins Sam Raimi in his own return to comic book movies after famously directing the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy of the mid-2000s. Raimi has raved on just how excited he is to add to the on-screen legacy of Doctor Strange, and the excitement is palpable among cast members and fans alike.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will bring back Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and will also see the return of Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff. The film is aiming to begin production later this year and is tentatively set to release in theaters on March 25, 2022.
