Planning to release in theaters on July 8, 2022, Captain Marvel 2 will be directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Megan McDonell. A rumor was just released that former Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will likely be heading the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. Nevertheless, not much is known about the story of Captain Marvel 2 besides it being an adaptation of Secret Invasion with Kamala Khan co-starring.
After having shut down all productions due to the pandemic for months, Marvel Studios has begun preparing to film again, along with preparing development for future projects. After getting a director just this month, it's only appropriate that the studio begins their plans on where and when to film Captain Marvel 2.
Insider Charles Murphy of Murphy's Multiverse reported that after finding out Marvel Studios had registered a production company for Captain Marvel 2 in the UK, that it will indeed film there, at least partially, and possibly in Europe, too.
The expectation is that filming should begin around late next Spring or early Summer if there aren't any hiccups concerning the coronavirus.
WHAT THIS MEANS
Captain Marvel had primarily filmed production in California due to its Film and Television Tax Credit Program that, in the words of Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito, "...not only will we be able to streamline our production process for this and other films we're working on concurrently, but we'll have more time to spend with our families." It probably also helped that Captain Marvel received at least $20.8 million in credits due to the program.
Still, with the coronavirus still an ever present danger to actors and crew on set, especially in the United States, Hollywood productions seem far more keen on filming in the UK and Europe than ever before. This means that Captain Marvel 2 will be joining other Marvel Studios productions in the UK, like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ant-Man 3, and Moon Knight.
