Gamora Wears Thanos' Avengers: Infinity War Armor In New What If Poster

Marvel Studios' inaugural animated series What If...? has kept with the MCU's Phase 4 multiversal theme, introducing its audiences to alternate scenarios ranging from a Quantum Realm-induced zombie apocalypse to T'Challa as Starlord and, most recently, a successful Ultron.

Season 1's penultimate episode explored the implications of Ultron having defeated the Avengers in Vision's body and laying waste to everything and everyone in his path, including Thanos, who was one stone shy of a complete Infinity Gauntlet.

Although, Episode 8 wasn't the first time What If...? audiences saw an alternate take on Thanos' story - or that of his daughters - in the show; and apparently, it won't be the last.

What If...? Finale Teases Gamora in Thanos Armor

Ahead of What If...?'s Season 1 finale airing on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, Marvel Studios revealed an official brand-new poster featuring Guardians of the Galaxy's Gamora but wearing the Mad Titan's armor.

While audiences have seen both Thanos and Gamora's sister, Nebula, more than once in the show, Gamora hasn't had much of a presence, only a split-second cameo in Episode 8

While fans know the Season 1 finale involves Ultron, Doctor Strange, the Watcher, and versions of heroes from past episodes like Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter, they don't know which universe this Gamora is coming from or how she obtained Thanos' armor.

However, this isn't the first time fans have seen Gamora's new look.

In a mid-season trailer for the series, Gamora can be seen in her armor in a circle shot mirroring that of 2012's The Avengers alongside Peggy Carter as Captain Carter, Natasha Romanoff's Black Widow, Party Thor, and more.

Gamora Assembles to Take on Ultron?

Within the prime MCU timeline, Gamora was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War before her 2014 version traveled with Thanos to the events of the Endgame. While she survives the battle and the second snap, she has no memory of her history with the Guardians and disappears at the end of the film.

The questions surrounding Gamora's future within the MCU parallel her role in What If...? as, again, she's been mostly absent from the series; there's no telling just when or where this version of herself is coming from.

It's possible that she obtained Thanos' armor following his death or was more of a partner to the Mad Titan in an alternate universe. Another possibility is that, since audiences didn't see much of her in "What If...T'Challa Became a Starlord?", she took up the Mad Titan's role herself after he abandoned it.

However, due to that shot of her from the mid-season trailer, it appears that this Gamora will be a hero fighting alongside other multiversal versions of the Avengers.

It's also worth noting that What If...? has laid the groundwork for a largely female-led team-up since Peggy Carter is now Captain Carter, Natasha Romanoff's Black Widow now has the Red Guardian's shield, and Pepper Potts and Black Panther's Shuri joined forces.

Perhaps the plan is for Gamora to be the final female addition to the crew, taking on Ultron in the finale.

What If...?'s Season 1 finale, and Gamora's story, is set to debut on Disney+ on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.
