WandaVision Producer Says Monica Rambeau's Role Wasn't Originally Mapped Out For Marvel Series

Fans eagerly awaited to see when and where Monica Rambeau would appear next after seeing her as a child in Captain Marvel. Still, no one expected it would be in WandaVision, played by Teyonah Parris as one of several supporting characters for the show. When it was revealed in set photos that Monica would be working with S.W.O.R.D., it made a bit more sense, but still leaving so many questions.

In November, co-executive producer Mary Livanos said that Monica's appearance in the show is itself a mystery about “...how the heck would she become involved in this odd sitcom that Wanda and Vision find themselves in,” which will unravel over the course of WandaVision. In a new interview, Livanos explains how Monica Rambeau found her way into WandaVision.

NEWS

In the latest SFX Magazine issue covering WandaVision, co-executive producer Mary Livanos discussed the research she does as a producer.

“I try to read all the comics, noting every appearance of each character that I deal with,” which is what caused the creative team to expand the cast of WandaVision beyond the two stars and include a grown-up Monica Rambeau, last seen as a child in Captain Marvel.

Livanos said that “Her inclusion in the series was a discovery, and not quite mapped out, but it's really enriched the show.”

WHAT THIS MEANS

It's interesting that Monica's inclusion in WandaVision was “a discovery, and not quite mapped out.” Did Marvel Studios have multiple characters in mind for the role she would have on the show? Will Monica have a significant impact on the plot with her involvement? How will the development of Monica's powers relate to Wanda and what's happening?

So many questions about Monica are still lingering before the premiere of WandaVision with no clear answers. It seems apparent that by the end of this season, Monica will at least have somewhat of a handle over her new powers before her next appearance in Captain Marvel 2 alongside Brie Larson and Iman Vellani.
