Static, a well known, contemporary DC Comics hero, was revealed to have a live-action movie in active developement at this August's DC FanDone virtual convention.
Static, actually teenager Virgil Hawkins, is a young man imbued with a multitude of superpowers. Chiefly among them are the abilities of electromagnetic control and generation.
Static is primarily known to non-comic book fans as the star of his very own animated series wthin the DCAU (DC Animated Universe), which ran from 2000 to 2004. But now, an entirely new generation of fans will likely be born.
According to THR, actor Michael B. Jordan is stepping onto the Static Shock film as a producer, via Outlier Society, his Warner Bros. based production banner.
Jordan shared the following statement:
“I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around black superheroes; our community deserves that. Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros on this initial step.”
Jordan is reported to be the creative center of the project. According to THR, should the movie be a hit, it could bring forth an entire franchise in its name, not only on film, but on other platforms as well.
WHAT THIS MEANS
The animated series is certainly quite highly regarded among fans. Static went on to make appearances in Justice League Unlimited as well as Young Justice, with both shows taking place in their own universes.
Static as a character has very broad appeal. His comics incarnation takes much inspration from Marvel's flagship hero, Spider-Man, and as such was patterned to be a modern counterpart of sorts for the famed web-slinger.
Michael B. Jordan is also no stranger to comic book movies and geek culture. A professed anime and comics fan, he also starred in 2018's Black Panther for Marvel Studios alongside the late Chadwick Boseman.
A release date has not been set for Static Shock but one would think a project such as this would generate a release date soon enough due to its importance and backing of star-power.
