When Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is released on June 18, 2027, Sony Pictures Animation will incorporate three major characters in the film who have played roles in Marvel Studios' MCU and Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies. Following the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the first-ever solo Spider-Man movie to feature Miles Morales, Sony began working on its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse. That film was released in theaters in 2023, and fans have been patiently waiting for its edge-of-your-seat cliffhanger to be resolved since.
To round out the trilogy, Sony is releasing Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2027. While a lot has been kept under wraps about the upcoming threequel, some characters have been confirmed to appear in the upcoming movie, and notably, three of them have also appeared in the MCU, which is a completely separate universe from the main setting of the Spider-Verse movies.
Across the Spider-Verse ended with Miles Morales trapped in a different universe (designated Earth-42). While there, it was revealed that his uncle, Aaron Davis, was still alive and working alongside Earth-42's Miles Morales, who became the Prowler instead of Spider-Man. Mahershala Ali's Aaron Davis will return in Spider-Verse 3, as he will play an important role in the Earth-42 timeline.
Notably, Aaron Davis was also featured in the MCU, as he made an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming. That version, played by Donald Glover, had only about 1 minute of screen time, but he mentioned having a nephew, teasing that the MCU could get its own version of Miles Morales.
It is worth noting that Glover's version of Aaron Davis was brought back for a cameo appearance in Across the Spider-Verse, as he was showcased in captivity in the Spider Society's base of operations. Most likely, Glover's Aaron Davis will not show back up in Spider-Verse 3, but fans will at least get to see Ali's animated version of the character.
Beyond the Spider-Verse has been given a June 18, 2027, release date, but fans still haven't been treated to a full trailer for the movie yet. However, a teaser was shown to CinemaCon 2026 attendees, and based on descriptions of the footage, it appears that Liev Schreiber's Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin) will be returning to make his imposing presence felt.
Kingpin was the main antagonist of 2018's Into the Spider-Verse but was left out of the second movie. However, Kingpin's inclusion in Spider-Verse 3 means that another Marvel character who has been in the MCU will be featured in the upcoming animated film.
Over the past five years, Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin has played a massive role in the MCU. He was introduced in the 2021 Hawkeye Disney+ series and was also seen in Echo and in both seasons of Daredevil: Born Again.
Since Spider-Verse 3 will be released in 2027, Marvel fans will get to see Kingpin in two projects during the calendar year, as D'Onofrio's Fisk was already confirmed to appear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, which will premiere on Disney+ in 2027.
While no details have been revealed about Kingpin's role in Beyond the Spider-Verse, fans will most likely be seeing a version of him from a different universe. It is possible that he is still alive and free on Earth-42, so he could be featured while Miles is stuck in that universe.
Another character who will appear in Beyond the Spider-Verse is Marvin Jones III's Tombstone, a character who was just introduced to the MCU. Notably, Jones III portrayed the crime boss in both the MCU and in the Spider-Verse saga, as he first brought Tombstone to life in 2018's Into the Spider-Verse.
Few details have been revealed regarding Tombstone's role in Spider-Verse 3, but considering he was largely featured alongside Kingpin in the first Spider-Verse flick, it is possible that he could find himself standing beside Fisk once again.
It is important to note that while Jones III played the live-action MCU version of Tombstone, as well as the animated one from the Spider-Verse movies, they are two completely different versions of the character from different universes.
So, Beyond the Spider-Verse is going to include at least three characters (who, ironically, are all villains) from Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies and other projects within the MCU. It is possible that Sony could include more characters in the upcoming film who have also appeared in Holland's films or the wider MCU, but fans likely won't know for sure until the movie is released next June.
However, there have at least been rumors that Holland himself will be featured in Beyond the Spider-Verse. If that were to happen, it would be a milestone moment for Spider-Man and superhero movies in general.
Will Tom Holland's Spider-Man Be in Beyond the Spider-Verse?
While nothing has been confirmed by Sony, there have been many rumors that Tom Holland will have a cameo in Beyond the Spider-Verse. Notably, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield already technically appeared in the Spider-Verse saga, as archival footage from their films was used in Across the Spider-Verse.
However, Holland has not appeared in either Spider-Verse movie, making him the only Spider-Man actor who hasn't. Holland has also gone on record saying that he wants to have a role in the Spider-Verse franchise. In 2021, during an interview with SYFY WIRE, Holland stated that Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal asked him if he wanted to be in the Spider-Verse movies. At the time, "no one [came] back to [him]," but he admitted that he wants to "be in them:"
"Amy actually asked me on the set of this movie and no one has come back to me. I wanna be in them."
Additionally, fans believe Spider-Verse director Phil Lord subtly teased that Holland would appear in Spider-Verse 3, citing a quote he gave about the upcoming film. Specifically, Lord mentioned that there will be "some great new cast mates," leading people to theorize that he was talking about Holland:
"We’re in the middle. The story’s wonderful. We have great collaborators. We brought on Alice Brooks to DP the show, and she’s shooting it virtually, which is really exciting. And some great new cast mates. Sorry to be so coy."
It is possible that Holland could make an appearance in Beyond the Spider-Verse. Fans would undoubtedly be excited to see him show up, but it likely wouldn't be in a major way. If Holland had a lot of screen time, his presence could take away from Miles' story, so if he does have a cameo, it probably should be in a small manner.
