Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Sequel Title May Have Just Been Revealed

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is certainly dominating the headlines in the superhero genre, and rightfully so, there are plenty of other Marvel properties from other avenues making a splash as well. Sony Pictures is helping with this endeavor thanks to outings like Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is the start of a hopefully big expansion into the Spider-Man universe.

However, Sony's biggest accomplishment to date may be something that came nearly three years ago - the animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Having the opportunity to utilize an animation style all its own, Into the Spider-Verse came to be not only one of Sony's most successful projects but also one of the most beloved superhero movies ever made. With an all-star voice cast and the first big-screen story focused on Miles Morales, this movie brought a sense of humor, heart, and all-around excellence from its storytelling and production quality.

After winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Picture in 2019, plans almost immediately started formulating for a sequel to release and continue this wild adventure. Now, rumors are pointing to exactly what that movie's title will be.

The Title for the Spider-Verse Sequel

A LinkedIn posting, via The Cosmic Circus, revealed that the sequel to 2018's Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse might be titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The film is due to release in theaters on October 7, 2022.

Sony Pictures VFX supervisor Simon Corbeaux reportedly updated his LinkedIn page with this title while confirming that he was returning to the role for the sequel:

Following this news, Corbeaux removed that title from the listing, which now reads "Untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse:"

What's in Store for Miles Morales And Crew

The first Spider-Verse movie largely focused on Miles Morales' introduction to a greater Multiverse after coming into contact with Hailee Steinfeld's Gwen Stacy and Jake Johnson's Peter B. Parker, amongst many others. While no plot details are known about this new outing, the title alone could tease big things for the numerous web-slingers set to come back.

By the end of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the nearly half-dozen Spider-people from other universes managed to return to their own worlds as they defeated the Kingpin and Kathryn Hahn's Olivia Octavius. The title Across the Spider-Verse could indicate that this time around, Shamiek Moore's leading hero will be the one working his way through other dimensions of the Multiverse.

This title also takes on a trend from the MCU, which has given its three live-action Spider-Man movies titles that are all similar to each other. All featuring the word "home" in the subtitle, this seems to be at least some kind of inspiration for Sony in its animated venture by only changing one word for its Spider-Verse sequel, keeping a similar feel for viewers in the movie's name.

No matter what the plot turns out to be, the hype is building quickly for this animated sequel even amongst potentially a dozen live-action MCU properties debuting in 2022. With Moore and Steinfeld returning to their voiceover roles, and hopefully more actors from the first movie joining them, Sony should have the chance to deliver another magical, animated outing for arguably the world's most famous superhero.

The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will debut in theaters on October 7, 2022.
