Marvel Reportedly Wants Oscar-Winner Olivia Colman For Disney+'s Secret Invasion

While Marvel Studios is just getting going with its Disney+ offerings, the company has big plans for the streaming service down the road.

One of these projects is Secret Invasion, which centers on the MCU's Skrulls infiltrating and masquerading as inhabitants of Earth. Following on from their unlikely team-up in Captain Marvel, the series will star Nick Fury and Talos in leading roles. Secret Invasion also seems to have found its main antagonist with MCU newcomer Kingsley Ben-Adir reportedly being cast in the lead villain role.

Though the show will not arrive on Disney's streaming service until 2022, Head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige did reveal that Secret Invasion will tap into "the paranoia elements" of the original comic book storyline.

Now, it seems that a prestige actress could be making her way into the upcoming Marvel series...

OLIVIA COLMAN IN TALKS FOR SECRET INVASION

In a new article from The Hollywood Reporter, Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman is reportedly in talks for a role in Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion.

It is currently unknown who Colman would play, but The Favourite actress would be joining Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Kingsley Ben-Adir in the Disney+ series.

The Hollywood Reporter writer Borys Kit noted that no concrete release date has been settled upon, but filming is expected to commence this fall in the UK and Europe:

WHICH MARVEL CHARACTER COULD OLIVIA COLMAN PLAY?

If brought aboard, Olivia Colman would serve as an excellent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Colman has taken on a wide range of roles across her career, playing a comedic role in British sitcom Peep Show to a more dramatic yet deranged character in The Favourite, to a combination of the two in Fleabag. This versatility ensures that whatever character is thrown Olivia Colman's way, she will nail it.

This might suggest that there are endless possibilities for Colman's potential role, but perhaps her protean nature as an actress could provide a hint for her MCU role.

A chameleon of an actress could lend herself nicely to the similar nature of Skrulls, so perhaps she could be playing Skrull queen Veranke. The character would suit an actress of Colman's caliber and certainly allow her to flex her acting muscles.

Notably, in a 2016 interview, Colman shared her hopes of portraying a "Marvel baddie":

I’ve always wanted to play a Marvel baddie. I’m not sure I fit the mold, though. Like a powerful, extraordinary woman. Somebody with superpowers would be really fun, but I’m not sure how many middle-aged woman they have in Marvel."

Secret Invasion is set to release on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
