After the most recent trailer for the Snyder Cut of Justice League released, fans and news outlets alike have been dissecting and analyzing every single frame to search for clues and teases signaling what's coming in next year's major HBO Max release. Every single frame of new footage from the black and white teaser consists of new footage due to Snyder using only his own material with nothing included from the 2017 theatrical cut, and it already feels like his unique vision is finally coming through in full.

Snyder has spent much of the last few weeks not only picking apart his new trailer and giving fans inside looks at what's coming next year but also teasing both unexplored storylines and behind-the-scenes stories explaining some of his most important plot and design decisions. This includes going in-depth about the film's original big bad, Steppenwolf, who will still play a major role in the Snyder Cut, even with the arrival of Darkseid.

The design of Steppenwolf was one of the major points of contention for fans all over the world and Snyder dove into this change in his latest trailer breakdown...

NEWS

During a recent breakdown of the latest Snyder Cut trailer, via the VERO True Social YouTube channel, director Zack Snyder explained the reasoning behind the change in design for Steppenwolf in the original cut of Justice League. With the villain looking so much different in the Snyder Cut, Snyder gave this explanation behind why Warner Bros. made such major adjustments to the villain's look:

"There were discussions and a lot of back and forth about the new design and the creation of this new design. I think the initial thought was that he was a little too scary and a little too alien and a little too intense. I personally thought he was awesome and that he represented a real threat, and does represent a real threat, not just to the Justice League, but to the entire planet... I think he looks amazing and that the team has done a great job."

WHAT THIS MEANS

Even though the Snyder Cut of Justice League will feature the classic DC Comics villain Darkseid alongside Steppenwolf, it does shed a little more potential insight into why 2017's theatrical cut was such a controversial movie upon its release. Considering that Steppenwolf was basically a complete unknown before his appearance in the biggest live-action DC team-up movie ever made, it seems that Warner Bros. was trying to play things safe after such mixed reactions to the first four movies of the DCEU, even outside of the directorial shift from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon.

Clearly, the Justice League cut from 2017 suffered greatly thanks to so many conflicting visions from Snyder, Whedon, and Warner Bros. At the very least, hopefully giving Zack Snyder free rein to make his very own movie will give much more clarity to not only the story within Justice League, but also the designs of the major players in the movie, too. Not much has been shown of Steppenwolf in the trailers thus far, but fans are already looking forward to seeing how he adapts and grows into a more concrete villain with Zack Snyder's vision behind him.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League is set for release on HBO Max sometime in 2021.
