John Cena as Peacemaker

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad seems to already be a success in the eyes of Warner Bros. executives, as a new spinoff in the form of Peacemaker has received the green light to premiere on HBO Max in the next year or so. WWE icon turned Hollywood star John Cena is set to reprise the role of the DC anti-hero in the series, and he will also be joined by a plethora of stars like Danielle Brooks ( Close Enough ), Chris Conrad ( Patriot ), Robert Patrick ( Terminator 2 ), and Jennifer Holland ( American Horror Story ).

As expected, most plot details of the show are still being kept under wraps, but it's been confirmed that a good chunk of the narrative will center on the origins of Cena's “douchey Captain America.” This seems to suggest that Peacemaker will be set before the events of The Suicide Squad, potentially laying the groundwork for the character's arc in the 2021 DCEU film.

Production for Peacemaker is now underway in Vancouver, and fans are hoping that the pandemic will not derail the show's filming schedule. And now, a string of new cast members has been revealed.

REPORT

The cast of James Gunn's Peacemaker series is growing. Deadline shared in a report that the John Cena-led HBO Max series officially adds Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn in a series regular role.

On top of that, three recurring guest stars will also be featured in the show, namely Lochlyn Munro as Larry Fitzgibbon, Annie Chang as Detective Sophie Song, and Christopher Heyerdahl as Captain Locke.

In a tweet, Gunn confirmed the casting additions by welcoming the new members to the Peacemaker family.

In addition, Gunn also revealed the roles of the four new cast members, confirming the earlier report from Deadline.

WHAT THIS MEANS

At this point, it's safe to say that the cast of Peacemaker is both star-studded and stacked.

Based on the casting descriptions, Munro and Chang's roles as detectives suggest that the duo will be tasked with hunting down Peacemaker for his crimes, and it looks like that they will have their hands full due to the anti-hero's immense dedication to preserving peace at any cost. Meanwhile, it's likely that Heyerdahl's Captain Locke will serve as the man calling the shots in the police department.

Given that Iwuji's character is not currently tied to any DC character, it's safe to assume that he will be an original character created for the HBO Max series. Since the actor has been confirmed to be a series regular, Iwuji's Clemson Mur could either serve as an ally or even the chief villain to Cena's anti-hero.

Regardless, the adventure-comedy series from HBO Max will look to flesh out Christopher Smith a.k.a. Peacemaker in surprising ways, and the addition of notable cast members will no doubt help in that department. All in all, Peacemaker is shaping up to be a must-see, and this bodes well for the future of The Suicide Squad franchise.
