The Marvels is set to feature the return of Brie Larson's Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel, and she will not be alone. The powerful MCU hero will be joined by two other heroines, Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau

Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury will also make his big-screen MCU comeback in the film, and it would only take the return of Lashana Lynch's Maria Rambeau to get the Captain Marvel band back together. However, WandaVision confirmed that Maria is dead in the present-day MCU, meaning that a return is not likely.

Despite that, many would agree that Lynch's character is crucial to the storylines of both Monica and Carol Danvers, and there's a good chance that the SWORD founder could be incorporated into the narrative.

Now, a new interview with the Captain Marvel actress may have shed some light on the subject.

Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch, who played Maria Rambeau in the 2019 MCU blockbuster, sat down with Radio Times to talk about her potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Lynch first pointed out that they need to ask Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige if she would make an MCU comeback, but the actress did tease that "weirder things" have happened in the superhero franchise:

“You’ll have to ask [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige that. In fact, I should ask Kevin Feige that. But you never know. Weirder things have happened in the franchise. I had a wonderful time on the first one and it would be great to have a wonderful time on another one.”

The No Time to Die actress then admitted that she "absolutely loved" WandaVision while also praising Teyonah Parris' performance as Monica Rambeau.

“I’m so glad they chose Teyonah Parris to play my daughter because she’s wonderful and a lovely human being.”

MARIA RAMBEAU'S RETURN MAKES SENSE

Plot details of The Marvels are still being kept under wraps, but the film's director, Nia DaCosta, already teased that the story would include elements of "pain and trauma." This tidbit could hint that the narrative will likely explore how Monica and Carol grieved the death of Maria, thus creating an opportunity for Lashana Lynch to return in flashback sequences for the sequel.

Many would agree that the heart of Captain Marvel's story was the strong friendship between Brie Larson's titular hero and Lynch's Maria Rambeau. It would be fitting for Lynch to reprise her MCU role in The Marvels, considering there is a wide gap between the events of the first film and its follow-up.

It's possible that The Marvels will showcase more of Maria's relationship with Monica over the years, thus giving a deeper meaning to the mother-daughter bond between the pair.

As for Carol's side of the story, it is unknown if the Avenger came back to Earth before the events of Avengers: Endgame to pay Maria a visit. If the heroine did return at some point during the Infinity Saga, The Marvels has the prime opportunity to showcase more of the bond between the two best friends.

Meanwhile, WandaVision hinted at a potential conflict between Carol and Monica. During the fifth episode of the series, Monica quickly changes the subject when Captain Marvel is brought up, heavily teasing that Carol wasn't around for her or her mother after the events of the first film.

This could set up an emotional standoff between Carol and Monica in The Marvels, with Maria at the center of it all. It will be interesting to see how all of this will play out.

The Marvels is set to premiere in theaters on November 11, 2022.
