The anticipation surrounding The Suicide Squad is high, especially after the hype from director James Gunn on social media. The outspoken director has been active on Twitter and Instagram to address questions from fans, giving away plot details while also teasing the inclusion of post-credits scenes.
The upcoming hybrid reboot/sequel is set to feature a new version of Task Force X, but holdovers from 2016's Suicide Squad like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller will still appear
Franchise newcomers include John Cena's Peacemaker, Idris Elba's Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian's Polka Dot Man, and the surprise inclusion of Sylvester Stallone as King Shark.
Marketing has revealed a good chunk of the film's narrative, such as the team's mission to Corto Maltese as well as the emergence of the villainous Starro the Conqueror. Still, there are details that have yet to be uncovered.
Now, two new stills have surfaced that could give clues on the whole ordeal.
TASK FORCE X'S MISSION
Entertainment Weekly released two new stills from The Suicide Squad, showcasing a new look at the sequel's Task Force X.
The first image revolves around the team led by Idris Elba's Bloodsport, and it appears that they are in one of the jungles of Corto Maltese. The still also places the spotlight on John Cena's Peacemaker, David Dastmalchian's Polka Dot Man, Daniela Melchior's Ratcatcher 2, and Sylvester Stallone's King Shark.
The second image shows Bloodsport and Peacemaker alongside Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and Peter Capaldi's Thinker.
HOW WILL TASK FORCE X SUCCEED?
The Suicide Squad will feature two iterations of Task Force X, and these new stills serve as a fitting reminder of that. While the images don't give away much, they still provide a fascinating look at the sequel's core characters.
Based on what's been revealed so far, it looks like Rick Flag's team will ultimately fail in the initial mission, leaving him and Harley Quinn as hostages of Corto Maltese. This could prompt Amanda Waller to send Bloodsport's team to rescue what's left of the Flag's Task Force X while also completing the earlier mission.
As for Peter Capaldi's Thinker, a previous image showed him and the rest of the Squad on an undercover mission. There's a chance that the aforementioned ordeal is where the Thinker is recruited by Bloodsport, thus leading to the still where he joins them side by side against Starro.
It remains to be seen who will survive this dangerous mission, but the trailers already teased that the team will go all-out in this suicide affair.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
