Star Wars is finally poised to deliver the live-action continuation of Star Wars Rebels that fans have craved for years in 2027. Set five years before the original Star Wars film, A New Hope, the animated series follows the Ghost Crew as they fight the Galactic Empire while dealing with personal issues and emotional turmoil that test their tightly-knit family unit. It ran for four seasons from 2014 to 2018, and nine years after that run ended, the story is finally continuing in live action the way fans wanted.

Ahsoka Season 2 will deliver that payoff. Rebels ended with Ahsoka and Sabine Wren setting off to find Ezra Bridger, their comrade who disappeared with Grand Admiral Thrawn. Ahsoka Season 1 picked up the thread and brought back most of the Ghost Crew, turning the series into a live-action sequel of sorts. However, Season 1 was missing one essential component that would have made it a fuller Rebels reunion.

Lasat rebel Zeb Orrelios, a key member of the Ghost Crew, was absent from that season, leaving many fans disappointed that they did not get the full reunion. Instead, he made his live-action debut in a brief appearance in The Mandalorian Season 3. Ahsoka Season 1 featured Sabine, Hera, Ezra, Chopper, and Jacen Syndulla, almost the entire Ghost Crew, which made Zeb’s absence sting.

Season 2 is finally bringing the Rebels family back together on the New Republic front. The Ahsoka Season 2 trailer unveiled at D23 was packed with goosebump-inducing action and Clone Wars-era Easter eggs. The most exciting moment in the minute-and-a-half teaser was Zeb and Ezra sharing a hug in a hangar as the New Republic prepared to battle Thrawn, who has returned to rally the Imperial remnant. Ezra returned home in the Season 1 finale, reuniting with Hera Syndulla, and the new footage suggests he reconnected with Zeb as well.

Eman Esfandi confirmed the reunion when he appeared on the D23 stage alongside Rosario Dawson and Hayden Christensen, excitedly sharing that, "Ezra is back! Ezra is home! He has reunited with his Rebels family and is fighting for the New Republic against the Imperial remnant." Sabine Wren is still stranded on Peridea with Ahsoka, and they will have to find their way home before the full Ghost Crew reunion can become a reality.

Will the Ghost Crew Return Beyond Ahsoka Season 2?

With Ahsoka Season 2 set for January 20, 2027, the biggest question after it ends is whether the Ghost Crew will return, and where that return could happen. The most obvious place is the Star Wars crossover movie that Dave Filoni, now Lucasfilm president and chief creative officer, first announced at Star Wars Celebration in 2023.

Often described as the Mandoverse film, it was intended to unite characters from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew in a New Republic-era story built around Grand Admiral Thrawn. However, development has stalled since then, with The Hollywood Reporter reporting in January that the movie had been put on the back burner.

That being said, with Filoni now in a more influential position, he could make the movie a priority again at Lucasfilm, although the poor performance of The Mandalorian and Grogu at the box office could deter him from moving forward with the project.

Alternatively, it could be reworked into a limited series on Disney+, a move Lucasfilm is reportedly considering, according to insider Daniel Richtman. Richtman said that a possible streaming version would be titled Heir to the Empire, but Lucasfilm has not confirmed the title or the format.

The crew’s return will also depend on how Ahsoka Season 2 ends. If it closes with Thrawn completely defeated, that could be the end of the show. If it ends on a cliffhanger with major unresolved storylines involving the Ghost Crew, a follow-up season becomes the obvious choice. Just as important, how well Season 2 is received could decide whether this corner of Star Wars continues, regardless of where the finale leaves the story.
