Star Wars returned to theaters for the first time in a decade with The Force Awakens back in 2015. The first film from both Lucasfilm and Disney was set to kick off the sequel trilogy. Prior to its release, the anticipation for The Force Awakens was second to none. Not only were fans ecstatic to see the return of characters such as Harrison Ford's Han Solo and Carrie Fisher's Leia but also new characters like the Knights of Ren.
The Knights of Ren were initially introduced during the first official trailer for the movie. In a quick, but effective shot, dark figures could be seen in the rain standing behind Adam Driver's Kylo Ren as his lightsaber was ignited. Following the trailer, thousands of theories about the mystery characters were formed, and fans couldn't wait to see them in action.
During the entirety of the sequel trilogy, the Knights of Ren only had a few minutes of screentime. They were essentially just extras in the background of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and although they had a bigger role in The Rise of Skywalker, they were taken out in seconds by Kylo.
The Knights of Ren were disappointing for the majority of Star Wars fans, but a leak recently surfaced that was supposedly a trailer for an upcoming Knights of Ren movie; a Lucasfilm executive has now addressed the issue.
Knights of Ren Trailer is Not Official
Recently, a video surfaced online that was apparently a leaked trailer for an upcoming Star Wars project on Disney+ titled The Knights of Ren: A Star Wars Story. The video gained some traction with fans since its reveal and has made it all the way to the eyes of Lucasfilm.
Pablo Hidalgo, a creative executive at Lucasfilm, recently took to Twitter to debunk the authenticity of the leaked video. In his tweet, he stated "I don't quite get why faked trailer leaks are so shaky. It's not that hard to hold a phone anymore."
The leaked trailer can be seen below:
A Needed Knights of Ren Movie
It actually wouldn't be a surprise if a Knights of Ren project was announced by Disney and Lucasfilm. The characters were extremely popular when they were first seen in The Force Awakens trailer, and although many fans were frustrated by how little they were used in the trilogy, many would arguably tune in to a movie or a series to learn more about them.
The backstory for Kylo Ren along with the Knights of Ren has already been slightly explored in a recent comic book line titled The Rise of Kylo Ren. In the comics, the Knights, who were at the time led by a Force-sensitive human named Ren, encountered Ben Solo during his early years of training with Luke Skywalker and planted the seed for him to join the Dark Side.
When Ben finally joined the Knights of Ren, he ended up killing Ren and claiming his place at the head of the Knights while also taking the name Kylo Ren.
Many people who saw the leaked video claimed that it couldn't be real because the Knights of Ren don't carry lightsabers, but in The Rise of Kylo Ren, the character of Ren actually does sport a red-bladed saber.
Although their backstory was told briefly in the comics, a Knights of Ren project could perform well on Disney+ and also be quite interesting for fans. It is likely that the leaked video was in fact fake, but perhaps it could spark an idea at Lucasfilm for an upcoming series or movie.
