Scream may be taking the breath out of audiences and box office returns away from Sony, but Spider-Man: No Way Home remains a strong prescience in the pop culture conversation. Tom Holland’s latest MCU venture introduced the Multiverse to moviegoers. The movie also brought back massive characters from earlier installments in the franchise such as Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro.
One of the most well-received returns was that of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, who teamed up with his fellow webheads played by Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. The three provided audiences with an experience that they never thought would happen.
When Garfield first debuted as the wall-crawler, his films and portrayal weren’t widely loved. The excitement that people have for Spider-Man today simply wasn’t there.
But now it seems that audiences have realized how great the actor is in the role, especially since there’s already a fan petition going strong for Sony to get The Amazing Spider-Man 3 off the ground.
Now, former Amazing Spider-Man writer James Vanderbilt has thrown his hat into the rink, joining the loud praise and agreeing with it wholeheartedly.
The Perfect Casting of Andrew Garfield
In an interview with Screen Rant, The Amazing Spider-Man script co-writer and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 story contributor James Vanderbilt commented on his iteration of Spider-Man showing up in No Way Home.
Vanderbilt noted how the best thing they ever did on the Amazing series “was to cast Andrew [Garfield],” and how great it is to see “the actor receive praise and accolades for his recent work:”
"So weirdly, I'd written Spider-Man for Tobey and for Andrew [Garfield], and I love what Tom [Holland] has done with it and what they've done within the MCU. So it was just so fun to see that. I always said the best thing we ever did was cast Andrew because I just think he's such a phenomenal actor, and so to see him getting the love right now and the accolades is just really special."
The Amazing Garfield Praise Continues
The actor undoubtedly deserves every bit of praise coming his way. After all, audiences have a lot of time to make up for, seeing that he was just as good in his original films—even if the script or other elements were slacking.
Garfield has gone on record to express how happy he was to return to the role. He’s even noted how he’d love to return to future Spider-Man movies if a good opportunity presented itself.
It’s safe to say Marvel Studios and Sony are both on the same page. There are a few possibilities that could bring the actor back: relaunching his Amazing series, becoming the Spider-Man of Venom’s universe, or crossover with a live-action Spider-Gwen played by none other than Emma Stone.
Either way, fans probably don’t have to worry. There's absolutely a chance that Garfield will be back sooner or later. Maybe it’ll be for the potential Secret Wars movie that the Russo Brothers may be involved with.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is playing in theaters worldwide.
