If Warner Bros. is looking for a champion film with mass appeal, the studio's upcoming sequel to 2019's Shazam! just might be it.
One of the most well-received DCU films in recent memory, Shazam! starred Zachary Levi as the superhero persona of young Billy Batson played by Asher Angel.
The film's sequel titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods looks to continue Batson's story, with Levi and Angel reprising their roles, while also introducing a few new characters played by Helen Mirren, Rachel Zegler, and Lucy Liu.
For the past few months, the film has been filming in Atlanta with the goal of a June 2, 2023 release; and now, a new photo suggests that filming has finally wrapped on this long-awaited sequel.
THAT'S A WRAP FOR SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS
Earlier today, Asher Angel posted a photo of himself with Zachary Levi on Instagram with a caption that read: "That’s a wrap @shazammovie #shazamfuryofthegods."
The two actors are pictured pointing at one another while the location of the post indicates that they're in Atlanta, Georgia.
Faithe C. Herman, who plays Darla Dudley in the Shazam! franchise, also took to social media to celebrate the sequel's wrap, sharing a photo of herself with many of the main cast members.
Other set photos from Shazam! Fury of the Gods' Atlanta shoot have made their way online in recent months, ranging from Shazam's scorched suit to Helen Mirren in her armored costume as the villainous Hespera.
MORE SHAZAM 2 NEWS ON THE WAY?
Due to set photos like these and more, fans know that Mirren, Liu, and Zegler look to be the film's antagonists and that Zegler's character may have a romantic relationship with Billy's best friend Freddy played by Jack Dylan Grazer.
In addition, now that Batson's siblings are aware of their own superhero personas, they're more likely to be more involved in the action this time around and have even received new suits for the sequel.
Even though filming has wrapped, fans may learn even more about the sequel during the upcoming DC FanDome event on October 16, 2021.
While it's true that Shazam 2 isn't set to hit theaters until the year after next, there are only three DC films slated ahead of its 2023 release. Therefore, it's possible fans may hear ( or even see?) a little something about the sequel during this promotional event.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to release in theaters on June 2, 2023.
