A new character will don the Black Panther suit when Ryan Coogler's next Marvel Studios film hits theaters in 2028, which puts one established hero's future in question. San Diego Comic-Con 2026 left no crumbs as Kevin Feige took the stage in Hall H to unveil details about his company's upcoming projects. The highlights included Ryan Gosling being cast as Ghost Rider, a surprise appearance by Ryan Reynolds in a Deadpool suit, and, of course, David Jonsson landing the role of T'Challa's son in Black Panther III.

Jonsson's arrival was met with thunderous applause, as he's built quite the fan club after standout performances in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk. But he didn't have to handle the spotlight alone. Black Panther stars Winston Duke and Letitia Wright stood right by his side and welcomed him into the family with open arms.

Wright will surely be someone that Jonsson can lean on, since she knows what it's like to be thrust into a lead role in a Marvel Studios movie. Her character, Shuri, began her MCU career as T'Challa's rebellious sister, spending most of her time in her laboratory, developing new technology to help Wakanda maintain its status as the world's most advanced country. Shuri's skills proved vital to defending Wakanda against Thanos' invasion in Avengers: Infinity War and defeating the villain again in Avengers: Endgame.

Prior to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, all signs pointed to Shuri sticking to what she knew. However, circumstances changed when T'Challa passed away in the sequel. Wakanda had no protector, which allowed Namor to flood the nation and kill Queen Ramonda. Through the pain, Shuri persevered and created a synthetic Heart-Shaped Herb, which granted her the powers of the Black Panther.

Namor couldn't keep up with Shuri's abilities and quick thinking, so he waved the white flag and left Wakanda to its own devices. Despite becoming Black Panther, Shuri still didn't feel right sitting on the throne. She left M'Baku in charge and traveled to Haiti, where she met T'Challa Jr.

Avengers: Doomsday marks Shuri's first appearance since Wakanda Forever. And Marvel Studios' latest marketing campaign doesn't make it seem like much has changed for her. The Doomsday footage released so far features her traveling with M'Baku and a few of Earth's Mightiest Heroes to meet with Namor, who may play a key role in the multiverse's defense.

What happens to Shuri in Doomsday and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is anyone's guess. There's really no way to predict the outcome of two movies that have the potential to change the MCU's status quo in major ways. The only certainty for Shuri is that she currently holds a mantle she will eventually pass on to her nephew.

Wright discussed Marvel Studios' succession plan with Entertainment Weekly shortly after being on stage at SDCC, talking about Shuri's mindset and her plans to poke fun at her new castmate.

"She now has that mantle to pass on, and [that] guidance and the wisdom... I'm going to have a really, really good time, a lot of fun, and I'm going to pick on him so much."

Based on those comments, it doesn't sound like Wright is too sure about what the future holds for Shuri. Fortunately, the comics lay out a path for the character that would be very easy for Marvel Studios to follow on the big screen.

Shuri Found A New Role After Leaving Black Panther Behind In Marvel Comics

Just like in the movies, Shuri became Black Panther after something awful befell her brother. T'Challa's ship crashed after a battle, leaving him in a coma. The powers that be in Wakanda chose Shuri as his replacement, a decision the Panther God didn't agree with. She took the rejection in stride and put on the costume anyway, putting her people's safety above Bast's feelings.

Shuri served her country well and even outdid T'Challa on a couple of occasions. But she knew that the Black Panther title wasn't meant to be hers forever, so she gave it up. Her story was far from over, though, as a major transformation awaited her.

During a battle with Thanos' army, Shuri sacrificed herself and ended up in the Wakandan afterlife. It was there that she was exposed to the memories and history of her country's people. After embracing everything that had come before, Shuri returned to the land of the living with a new title, Aja-Adanna, or "the Keeper of Wakandan Lore."

Marvel Studios has been open to turning characters into lorekeepers in recent days. Loki saw himself become the God of Stories at the end of Season 2 of his Disney+ series, giving up everything to hold the multiverse together. Being the Aja-Adanna doesn't come with that kind of responsibility. However, it's a role that would fit Shuri well, as she would be able to provide sage advice to her nephew as he finds his footing as Wakanda's new protector.
