There was a lot to take in for those who watched Spider-Man: No Way Home. For one, villains such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock were back on the screen as if they never left. On top of that, both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire put back on their Spidey suits to aide Tom Holland’s webhead. The cherry on top? Charlie Cox’s return as Matt Murdock.
The last time the hero was seen was in Netflix’s Daredevil, which ran for three seasons before getting canceled. When he was on the screen, all of his stories never really intersected with the bigger MCU storyline or characters (the show’s canonicity in that regard is still in question).
But if the character were to have been able to interact and crossover more with other franchises, what storylines would have been touched upon?
According to the actor under the suit, he would have enjoyed seeing a romance blossom between Matt Murdock and Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow.
Charlie Cox & the ‘Sexy’ Black Widow
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Daredevil and Spider-Man: No Way Home actor Charlie Cox commented on what he would want to see play out in the MCU that isn’t more time with the web-slinger:
Cox’s first answer was how he “really like[s] the… Daredevil/Black Widow stuff” and that he finds it really “funny and sexy at the same time:”
“I really like the Black Widow, the Daredevil/Black Widow stuff. That relationship is really funny to me, I don't know why. I find it really funny and sexy at the same time. Other than that, it's difficult. The obvious one is Spiderman, isn't it? That is the one, I would have to get more time with Bullseye. We just touched on that story, and we were just gearing up for it before we weren't allowed to continue. I really enjoyed working with Wilson Bethel in that character. There's so many, but I think the obvious one is, it would be really cool to get some Daredevil/Spiderman stuff, more stuff.”
Daredevil & Black Widow Crossover to Come?
Sadly, for Charlie Cox, the days when Matt Murdock and Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff could start a romance ended the day she met concrete in Vormir. It’s fairly unlikely she would be raised from the dead just so Marvel can explore that side of her character.
Though, undoubtedly, Matt Murdock would arguably be a much better love interest for her than, say, Bruce Banner—a relationship that never clicked with audiences.
Both Murdock and Romanoff do have a long-lasting relationship in the comics. The two even moved out to San Francisco for a time, but in the end, things didn’t work out.
While Karen Page might still be the famous lawyer’s future lover in live-action, there’s another option: Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. Yes, she’s not Natasha, but she is the current Black Widow, and Marvel has shown how it isn't afraid to stray away from the source material. She’s also alive, which is a plus over the previous Russian assassin.
With Daredevil set to enter the wider MCU in ways never seen before, there are plenty of exciting opportunities ahead. Rumors indicate the next time he’ll be seen is in She-Hulk, with Echo sometime afterward.
Hopefully, the hero will also get to have some more adventures with Spider-Man when Tom Holland returns to the big screen.
