The global pandemic heavily affected major pop culture conventions like San Diego Comic-Con in 2020, forcing studios to adjust and shift to an online platform in order to reveal new projects and titles. As part of the adjustment, Warner Bros. and DC created DC FanDome, an online convention focused on showcasing the current and future content of the superhero franchise across various mediums.
DC FanDome 2020 heavily featured projects such as Zack Snyder's Justice League, The Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman 1984 while also revealing exclusive sneak peeks at the DCEU's future through previews of The Flash, Black Adam, and the highly anticipated The Batman. The free online event didn't just feature the big screen branch of DC as it also revealed fresh looks at the Arrowverse's The Flash and HBO Max's Titans and Doom Patrol.
While the event experienced technical difficulties along the way, the glitch didn't stop DC FanDome from making history since it generated a total of 22 million viewers across 220 countries and territories over its 24-hour run. Clearly, Warner Bros. took note of the event's success due to the confirmation that a 2021 edition of DC FanDome will arrive in October.
Now, exclusive details about the event have surfaced online.
A STACKED DC FANDOME 2021 EVENT
The official press release for DC FanDome 2021 showcased a stacked lineup of panels which includes an exclusive trailer for Robert Pattinson's The Batman, the first look at Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam, a sneak peek at Ezra Miller's The Flash, behind-the-scenes looks at Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and much more.
The small screen branch of DC will also be highlighted in the online event with the press release confirming that a special look at new seasons of Batwoman, The Flash, Superman & Lois, and Sweet Tooth will be released. A farewell tribute to Supergirl alongside a celebration of 100 episodes of DC's Legends of Tomorrow will also be featured.
Wrapping up the TV side of DC, the first look at CW's Naomi and a sneak peek at an upcoming episode of DC's Stargirl will also be revealed.
Warner Bros. Games is also expected to feature new reveals from Warner Bros. Games Montreal's Gotham Knights and Rocksteady Studios' Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
HBO Max will unveil an exclusive look at James Gunn's Peacemaker series and the limited event series known as DMZ. The streaming service will also debut sneak peeks for returning favorites such as Titans and Doom Patrol.
Warner Bros. Animation will feature a look at Aquaman: King of Atlantis alongside sneak peeks at the third season of Harley Quinn and the all-new series Batman: Caped Crusader. On top of that, a spoiler preview of Young Justice: Phantoms will be revealed.
Warner Bros Home Entertainment will also preview two upcoming original DC Animated Films:
"A sneak peek at Superman and the rest of the Justice League in Injustice, an all-new animated movie inspired by the popular games and comic, as well as the premiere of the trailer for the all-new animated heist movie Catwoman: Hunted. Both movies are produced in association with Warner Bros. Animation."
Lastly, DC publishing will reveal a plethora of upcoming comic books including tie-ins to Wonder Woman's 80th anniversary.
MORE FRESH LOOKS AT DC PROJECTS
Based on what's been revealed, it's safe to say that this year's DC FanDome will be filled with tons of surprises and exclusive reveals.
It isn't surprising that Robert Pattinson's The Batman will headline the 2021 edition of the superhero online convention, especially after the film's impressive panel from 2020 led by director Matt Reeves. Many would agree that the film's first trailer, which debuted in the same event, boosted the anticipation for the DCEU entry, and it looks like another exclusive sneak peek will dial up the hype even further.
Aside from The Batman, the anticipation surrounding Ezra Miller's The Flash is also high as the film is expected to take a deep dive into the concept of the multiverse. Meanwhile, after months of production teases and tidbits from Dwayne Johnson, it's likely that the first look at his Black Adam costume will finally be unveiled at the event.
It's worth pointing out that DC FanDome 2020 was a two-part event, but it seems that this press release essentially confirmed that the 2021 edition will be a one-day affair. Given the massive lineup of panels that was revealed, it will be interesting to see how Warner Bros. and DC will create the schedule for every project.
Before DC FanDome became a two-parter, the initial schedule of the event featured an evenly distributed set of panels categorized into different sections, such as the Hall of Heroes, Watchverse, Kidsverse, Youverse, Funverse, and Insideverse. It remains to be seen if Warner Bros. will incorporate the same strategy this year, but it's possible that other panels will be shorter to give way for longer panels for projects like The Batman and The Flash.
DC FanDome will launch on October 16, 2021, starting at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET.
