The future of the DC Universe streaming service might be in question, but the platform's original shows will certainly have a future somewhere else. Previously, reports have emerged about massive employee layoffs under the DC Universe umbrella, giving fans of shows like Titans and Doom Patrol reasons to worry.
However, DC's Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee confirmed in a previous interview that the original content of the DC Universe streaming service is "migrating to HBO Max." This means that the aforementioned shows will continue to tell more stories moving forward. Doom Patrol was the latest show to move to HBO Max, with the sophomore season debuting on the platform several months back.
However, the quirky superhero show also fell victim to the ongoing pandemic, cutting short production of its second season. Despite that, it seems that the show still has a bright future ahead based on a new report.
CONFIRMATION
Deadline shared in a report that HBO Max has officially renewed Doom Patrol for a third season. Doom Patrol executive producer expressed his excitement about the renewal by sharing an official statement:
“On behalf of the wonderful cast, writers and crew, we are thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to return to Doom Manor. And we are especially thankful for our partners at Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, DC Universe and, of course, HBO Max.”
In a separate statement, HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey shared her enthusiasm about the future of Doom Patrol on the streaming platform:
“Doom Patrol came to HBO Max with an already deep and passionate fan base and has risen to the top as one of the most-watched Max Originals on the platform. The series sits well in our portfolio and we are glad to greenlight a third season to continue this distinctive style of storytelling that resonates so well with critics and fans alike.”
WHAT THIS MEANS
Doom Patrol returning for a third season is a no-brainer since the wacky superhero show proved to be a hit among fans and critics. On top of that, the sophomore season of the DC Universe original series only had nine episodes instead of the originally planned ten sue to COVID-19 cutting Season 2 production short. In turn, the show's season finale ended on a massive cliffhanger, with most of the team decapitated by the imaginary shenanigans of Candlemaker.
With most of the plot elements unresolved, it makes sense that Doom Patrol returns for another season. It remains to be seen what storyline will the third season tackle, but it's a safe bet that the first few episodes will look to resolve several mysteries such as Dorothy's fate at the hands of the Candlemaker, Niles' quest for a cure, and how the team will go back to normal from an unusual candle-wax circumstance.
The unpredictable nature of Doom Patrol is one of its strongest trait. The first two seasons managed to balance absurd humor with emotional stories while also elevating each of the character's arc as the story progressed. With a third season on the horizon, it allows Doom Patrol to go in new and exciting directions, but still keeping the show's proven formula intact.
