With all eyes currently on May's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many may have forgotten the Multiversal blockbuster will be followed closely by Thor: Love and Thunder in July. But with only a few months to go until release, fans are beginning to wonder when the first trailer will drop to highlight the return of Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder and Natalie Portman's Jane Foster.
At the time of writing, the July 8 release of Love and Thunder is only 103 days away. As of now, that already places Thor 4 with at least the second shortest trailer-to-release gap in MCU history, having recently beat out Spider-Man: No Way Home and soon to surpass The Incredible Hulk's 93-day record.
Thor: Love and Thunder looks set to be among the MCU movies with the most Oscar winners in one blockbuster including Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and director Taika Waititi.
Due to the 2022 Oscars ceremony airing on ABC - a Disney-owned network - the event has been speculated to promote Disney properties in some capacity. The Academy is eager to attract more viewers to the event as annual ratings continue to fall, leading many to speculate a major Marvel premiere could be thrown into the mix to drive viewers.
But unfortunately, it looks as if the wait for Thor: Love and Thunder's debut trailer is set to continue.
Thor Love and Thunder Rumor Further Pushes Trailer Release
According to a recent post on Twitter from Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes' Erik Davis, it's not expected that Thor: Love and Thunder's first trailer will air during the Sunday night (March 27) broadcast of the 2022 Oscars ceremony amid speculation of a release during the event.
Davis reports that the rumored Disney trailer during the event is "not Thor" and he "[doesn't] believe [fans will see] anything from that film tonight:"
"It’s not Thor, or at least I don’t believe we are seeing anything from that film tonight."
When Will the Thor 4 Trailer Release?
Many will be disappointed to hear Thor: Love and Thunder's first trailer won't debut during the Oscars ceremony, but it's not a huge surprise. Between Moon Knight, Multiverse of Madness, and Ms. Marvel, Marvel Studios has three projects releasing before the fourth Asgardian outing, making the marketing campaign more complex than ever.
At the time of writing, Love and Thunder is just seven days away from breaking The Incredible Hulk's record for the shortest trailer-to-release window. With no evidence of an imminent trailer release, Thor 4 looks set to break that unfortunate record to receive the latest first look in MCU movie history, but these shorter windows may be the future.
With Marvel Studios now releasing upwards of three movies and four Disney+ series a year, balancing the MCU marketing campaigns just got more complicated than ever.
Moon Knight is a matter of days away from its premiere, meaning any major Marvel trailers could easily detract from the surrounding discussion. Ms. Marvel also only recently received its first look, so Marvel and Disney may well want to let that one hang a little longer before premiering any other major trailers.
Looking ahead, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit theaters in early May, so throughout the latter weeks of April, all eyes will be on the Multiverse adventure. Based on this, Thor: Love and Thunder's first trailer will likely debut early in April, or be saved to release alongside Multiverse of Madness in May.
But after months of playing the trailer guessing game, it's too hard to predict with any certainty when fans will finally get their first peek at Thor: Love and Thunder before it hits theaters on July 8, 2022.
