Disney+ Confirms New Special on Star Wars Day 2022

Boba Fett, Star Wars

It's been two months since The Book of Boba Fett completed its run on Disney+, with the series finale having broken viewership records. The series split time between the past and present, giving fans a look at how Boba survived the Sarlacc and was taken in by a Tusken tribe to lay the groundwork for his rise as a crime lord. Filled with cameos and significant plot developments, the show quickly became mandatory viewing for the MandoVerse.

In large part, that's why the reception to the series has been so mixed. Boba Fett certainly never reached the highs that The Mandalorian did, instead serving to the bridge the gap to the latter's third season. The two most popular episodes ironically didn't feature Boba at all, a strong indicator of how audiences were receiving the former bounty hunter's new direction.

As always, the production for the series brought its share of difficulties. The crew had the unique experience of shooting Boba Fett during the height of the pandemic, though that didn't keep Temuera Morrison from dropping some Pykes. Also challenging was the effort of bringing Luke Skywalker to life, whose likeness was created through CG and lines generated through the ReSpeecher application.

The behind the scenes process for Star Wars projects is always fascinating, and Boba Fett promises to have several unique moments from the set worth seeing. Fortunately, fans are in for a deep dive, as this year's Star Wars Day festivities will include a special that pulls back the curtain on the latest Disney+ series.

Disney Gallery: The Book of Boba Fett will drop on Disney+ on May 4 to celebrate Star Wars Day. The official description can be seen below:

“Disney Gallery: The Book of Boba Fett” explores the behind-the-scenes story of the legendary bounty hunter’s return to Tatooine with mercenary Fennec Shand, seeking to claim the territory once run by Jabba the Hutt. In this insightful new special, filmmakers, cast and crew reveal never-before-seen footage, groundbreaking technology and the practical effects that brought it all to life.

A Closer Look at Boba's World

This announcement comes as a pleasant surprise, continuing the trend of Disney Gallery specials dropping for the live-action Star Wars shows. There have been three for The Mandalorian to this point (the most recent released last Fall focused solely on Luke Skywalker's appearance), and they've all boasted fun looks at the behind the scenes process and juicy interviews with the creators and cast.

The Book of Boba Fett is the first visual Star Wars project to focus solely on the character, despite his iconography dating back over 40 years. Many criticized the character's light motivations and a departure from his colder nature in the films and The Mandalorian, but the Disney Gallery piece will allow Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to explain the creative process for the series.

Some of the best moments in Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian Season 2 involved Temuera Morrison goofing around on set, and there's surely more from where that came from. The actor turned in another stellar performance in Boba Fett, and his storied history with the Star Wars franchise made his portrayal all the more unique. Part of the filming experience is the fun, which will be on full display.

With Boba Fett acting as The Mandalorian Season 2.5, expect deeper exploration into Din and Grogu's stories, as well. The Darksaber was featured prominently in the show, and with more history provided for Mandalore's struggle with the Empire there may be teases for Season 3. Of course, significant attention will be given to Luke Skywalker as well, and probably Clone Wars characters like Cad Bane and the Pykes, too.

All seven episodes of The Book of Boba Fett are streaming now on Disney+. Disney Gallery: The Book of Boba Fett debuts on May 4.
