Given the nature of Kenobi and the popularity of the MandoVerse, Star Wars: Andor has largely flown under the radar as its release draws near. Announced in late 2018, the series will be the first spy thriller in the galaxy far, far away, with Diego Luna reprising his role of Cassian Andor from Rogue One. Several other familiar faces from the spin-off film are reportedly returning as well, including Ben Mendelsohn's Director Krennic and Forrest Whittaker's Saw Gerrera.
With such a packed slate for 2022, there's been a significant amount of discussion regarding Lucasfilm's plans for the series' release. Disney announced that Andor would be dropping at some point in Q4, which spans the Summer months of the year. The project will span 12 episodes for its first season, with a budget and production more akin to feature films with the number of practical sets constructed.
It's been a long time coming for Andor, as the project endured several production delays and creative turnover. However, things are finally in the home stretch. With Lucasfilm and ILM currently hard at work on post-production to reach the Summer deadline, a new rumor has surfaced that gives a specific month for the series' debut.
When Does Star Wars: Andor Release on Disney+?
Bespin Bulletin shared that, per their sources, Star Wars: Andor may be set to premiere on Disney+ in August 2022. This will be the next big project to stream on Disney+ following Marvel Studios' Ms. Marvel, which will debut on June 8.
Rebellions Are Built On Hope
Like the Death Star, the production for Andor went through many setbacks and delays - but the series is nearly fully operational. With an August premiere window, Andor will seamlessly allow Disney+ to continue the roll-out of live-action projects from one of Disney's most popular IPs. Many fans hoped to see the series before the final months of the year, and it appears that wish will be granted.
Of note is that Andor Season 2 is also set to begin production in the Fall. If the series follows a similar production pattern to the projects in the MandoVerse, Lucasfilm may be setting Andor up to be an annual August release for the next several years. Reports indicate the series will be three seasons, and though there's no use of The Volume for the project, pre-existing sets and costumes can significantly cut down the amount of pre-production needed.
Obi-Wan Kenobi's teaser trailer presented an astonishingly cinematic feel for a streaming series, and Andor looks to be following the trend by shooting on location with real sets. The first footage for the series can be expected to drop during Star Wars Celebration in May, along with the official release window that will confirm (or deny) the rumored August date.
If August proves to be true, the picture for the rest of 2022 has become much clearer. Following Obi-Wan Kenobi, it can be presumed that The Bad Batch Season 2 will come in the Summer months to fill the gap until Andor. After the Rebel spy's 12 episodes have made the rounds, fans can expect to be reunited with Din Djarin and Grogu for their next adventure in The Mandalorian Season 3 to close out the year.
Star Wars: Andor will reportedly debut on Disney+ in Summer 2022.
